How Fast Can I REALLY Get?

A lot of the very fast internet connections state that you can get upto e.g. 24mb or 8mb, but as far as I know that's dependant on how far away the exchange is. Is there a way of finding out how much connection speed I would really be getting (apart from ring "customer services" lol).

www.samknows.com

Check your postcod/telephone and see what it says about ADSL Max. However, you should post what your SNR margin and line attenuation are, both gained from your router (unless you're on a USB modem) :)

I have a related question so to save a new thread... does the limit which BT gave me when they did their line test also apply to LLU services? They told me I couldn't get more than 6mb on this line but we had 8mb with UK online before and I'm sure it worked at close to max speed... will I be unable to get the 22mb service? Perhaps with this being ADSL 2 makes it all different  I will give them a call tomorrow anyway but if anyone has any ideas... :)

I know ADSL2+ provides better speed over longer distances (ie 2km or further) over MaxDSL.

You may get higher speeds, but i will be able to give you more info when my SkyBB Max 16mb is activated. Hit no more than 350k with max during off peak with MaxDSL dispite syncing at the highest possible rate.

Also if you know your line attenuation and snr/noise margins (get them from your router) you can try this but bear in mind that all of these 'checkers' should be used for (rough) estimates only, usually only true way to know is once it is up and running.

I agree the checkers and calcs must be taken as best case senario not "you will get this speed" also they will normally tell you the expected sync rate this is not your actual max download rate.

As an example of Dsl Max if you sync between 4000K and 4543K you will get a BRAS profile of 3500K

The checkers can also underestimate the speeds you will actually get. eg. mine says I can get 512k but I am getting 2Mb with Max.

Depends which checker you're referring to - anything derived from the BTw database will normally be very conservative.

Yes those were what I was thinking of, which includes samknows :)

The BT wholesale checker information seems to change the results it gives as I have seen results for my line from the check give 5 different results over the last 4 months.

The original questions was how fast can I actually get and the answer to that with DSL max is no one knows until the line is live. I have seen lines that BTw checker have said will support 6.5Mb or higher that have after weeks of troubleshooting and Bt engineer visits turned out that the line will not support broadband at all. The checkers are very much a finger in the wind based on data available for the line but the real world performance of the line it cannot give.
