That jet vs turbo vs bike video got me thinking, exactly how quickly does your standard 747 accelerate and what speed does it take off at?

I feel this is the most appropriate section to ask this question in.

Cheers

Last time I was on a 747 I think it took off at about 180mph, accelleration was ok, comparable to a 306 dturbo ;)

Vr for a 747-400 varies from around 120Kts - 170Kts depending on weight, flaps, air temperature, density altitude etc...

I have no idea about the actual rate of acceleration. This would also vary vastly depending on weight etc... A 744 at MTOW needs about 3000m TODA. Maybe someone can do the math from that :p

Those are rough figures and are by no means accurate.

I think I stand for most people when I say, Pardon? :p :D

basically it needs 3000 metres to take off while at maximum weight

although i assume 3000 is an estimate anyway because it doesnt sound too accurate :p

assuming linear acceleration - its about 1.07m/s/s

i think

and:

1:15 to take off

25s to 60

41s to 100

So it needs around 1.9 miles to get to 200mph. Surely someone with some science knowledge can work out how fast it accelerates?

Thing is with a jet engine its will probably accelerate faster as the aircraft gets rolling as you start to get the compressor stage of the engine working better as the stators aligned the air better. So assuming even linear acceleration there maybe points where the peak acceleration rate is higher than that.

yup - you cannot assume linear acceleration at all - was just using what was available at the time

I would say a 747 would get to NY quicker :D

unless you have to take in to account check in times etc ;) ;)

Not sure if you guys took it into account, but Scuzi said that the Vr was 120-170 knots (nautical miles per hour for those that don't know) so they need to be converted to something other people use (well apart from aviators and sailors :D)

Normally fully loaded its about 160- 180mph;)

Take-off speed of a 747 is minimum 163mph if i remember correctly. There are some very short runways around the world so i would assume it would accelerate harder depending on the runway.
