A work colleague has offered me his unopnened dell system that is no longer required, the specs are

2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo (E4500 with the 800fsb and 2mbcahce)
2gb memory
500gb hard drive
DVD Burner
Integrated Intel Graphics

for £210, how good a deal is this?

My current machine is a self build;

2.8ghz P4 (Northwood)
1gb memory
160gb, 250gb, 500gb hdd's
Radeon 9800SE AIW
DVD Burner

Thanks :)

For 210 that aint too bad, but if you spec something urself you will see if it's worth it. Remember it's all dell componants and graphics are intergrated so it's not much of a gaming machine.

Not that great

2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo (E4500 with the 800fsb and 2mbcahce) dunno about £60
2gb memory £40
500gb hard drive £70
DVD Burner £20
Integrated Intel Graphics £0

Tell him to throw in an 8800T then buy it

Probably about 50-60 quid less than new. I'd rather get the new kit tbh. And you know that dell will have sourced the cheapest parts they can lay their hands on.

It is new isn't it??? could do with finding out what motherboard bios options are as I doubt you will be able to overclock it much but for that price its a bargin if dont want to build your own

TBH my ocing days are over. Also I dont really require as much power as I once did (dont do any gaming any more, nor any video conversion). I hadnt planned on getting a new machine until I was offered this.

depends? whats the model number and case? some of the new Dells come in really nice compact small cases that would make great servers or Media PCs

id go for it

youl struggle to build something similar for the price even using budget mobos and cases

im assuming it include windows aswell which is another 70~ quid ?

Seems a good price for what it is, but as others have said it all depends on the quality of the components used.

It seems ok to me. You have a copy of windows with it too I imagen?

as stated though bad for gaming. but you dont do that anymore. you should have a pcie for upgrade if you do decide to at some point anyway.

it would be a bonus if you could utilise your existing hdds in there too. depending on which model of dell it is though it may not have space for another. you may want to check that with him.

If you...

1. Don't game
2. Don't do anything with video
3. Don't OC etc. anymore
4. Wasn't intending on getting another computer before...

Why are you looking at this deal? Don't buy it and save yourself £210 - it's only a 'bargain' if you were wanting / needing something like it in the first place. If you are buying it because you think you may be missing out on a good deal but don't actually need it you are throwing away money that could be used elsewhere.

That's a different point of view ain't it! ;)

i can see why this would be tempting but if you buy dell youll be saying 'DOHHH' as already mentioned in this thread cheap/low quality parts.
see if he'll let you 'part-break' it and ask how much for the;
E4500 (http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-159-IN)
2gb memory (but only if its DDR2 667/800 or more)
500gb hard drive (sata would be nice but IDE still ok if the price is right :))

then buy the rest to complete the system from elsewhere :) tahts what id do
