How good are onboard graphics?

As title, how good are onboard graphics?

I'm building a basic system for word processing, email, surfing and some light desk top publishing etc. and wondered if I will get away with onboard graphics?

I'm not expecting miracles, but so long as the system runs reasonably well and there are not too many onscreen delays or 'stuttering' effects I'll be happy.

Onboard graphics are fine for that sort of use

Nothing wrong at all with modern onboard graphics for general desktop use.

Infact i'd recomend them for that sort of use. Cheaper and put out less heat. I use my 6100 ig for css lol.

I use to use my onboard X300 (cut down version of the actual X300) for CSS and HL2. Very good for onboard, but used system ram as GPU memory so overall performance was slow until i got my 6600GT.

My onboard X300 is DX9.0 compatible (DX9 shaders were usable in CSS and HL2), so im guessing it will work for Aero in Vista.

Vista, yes (as long as its dx9), cheesy features, no.

My Girlfriend played WoW for ages on her laptop, awful graphics chip!

As has been said, it'll be fine.

Thanks a lot for replies. I won't bother then going to the expense of getting a card and will stick to the onboard graphics
