Hey guys,

Me and the missus are moving into a new place sometime this month, At this place we share with her mother we have virgin, TV, phone and BB.

At the new place we can't get TV with virgin cos its not cabled there (sucks)

So we are looking at going with Sky, For TV, Phone & BB.

Are sky any good ? easy to deal with ? any major issues you have with them ?

Thanks James

My dad has the package (TV, Phone and BB 20Meg) and we've had no problems at all, not as far as I know anyway. Internet is good I get roughly 1mb/s download speed which is fine for me.

In my opinion they are a good company and we've had no problems

I have had no issues with sky at all. There broadband is very good, been with them for two years now and not one outage. I am a heavy downloader and never been moaned at either.

Just make sure you can get LLU up to 20mbit broadband from them and not the rubbish Sky connect/BT product which us traffic shaped to the hilt.

The speed you get will depend on how far you are from the exchange.

Local loop unbundling. Basically it's where Sky have their own equipment in the telephone exchange so you are not restricted by BT networks. LLU also means you may get the faster ADSL2+ of up to 20Mbit and not the older ADSLMax up to 8Mbit product.

Sky LLU has no traffic shaping and the unlimited package is truly unlimited, unlike so many others.

I'm on Sky LLU Unlimited and got no complaints, it is truly unlimited as said above. Just wish i could get more than 8mb but that's not Sky's fault.

Best bet is to phone them up. Sky have an online checker but that still says i can't get the Unlimited package even though i've been on it a few years now.

Currently we estimate that the maximum download speed your line could support is 5Mb Help

Great news - you're in a Sky Broadband network area, so you can choose from Sky Broadband Everyday Lite or Unlimited. You can also benefit from free evening and weekend UK# landline calls with Sky Talk and you'll save £5 per month on Sky Broadband with any Sky Talk calls package.

5MB isn't a lot thats what the Sky online checker says,

Is there any site that tells you how close your nearest exchange is and who runs it ? or has their software in it ?

Found one samknows, says my nearest exchange does have Sky / Easynet:
Enabled as of 07/05/2007 on the LLU operator so i'm guessing that is good for me ?

Yeah, LLU enabled at your exchange is good :).

How far away from the exchange are you? When I got sky it said I'd get 4Mbit/s, but it syncs around 19000Kb, with downloads around 1.9MB/s.

If you tell us approximatly how far away you are we'll be able to give you a general idea of what speed you'll get.

You'll get roughly the same speed no matter which LLU isp you go with though, so don't decide against Sky because say Be* say that you'll get 20Mbit with them, as it's basically just line length and quality (which will be the same no matter which ISP you go with) that dictates what speed you'll get.

If it's 2 miles your line will be longer than that, probably over 3miles. Sky's estimation might not be far wrong.

ADSL2+ Sync rates
Less than 1km should be 23-24Mbit
1.0km = 13.81dB = 23Mbit
1.5km = 20.7dB = 21Mbit
2.0km = 27.6dB = 18Mbit
2.5km = 34.5dB = 13Mbit
3.0km = 41.4dB = 8Mbit
3.5km = 48.3dB = 6Mbit
4.0km = 56dB = 4Mbit
4.5km = 62.1dB = 3Mbit
5.0km = 69dB = 2Mbit

It also told me 4 when I joined up but I knew it'd be higher as the exchange is in the next street. Initially I had 16 then they popped it up to 20.

So you might get 6-8Mbit if you are 2 miles away, although it could be longer than that as lines are never straight.

Still it's a pretty good price.
