As title really, looking at the hp hdx 16 laptop as a desktop replacement for my machine which has a 7600 gt in.

What does the 9600m gt mobile chip compare to desktop wise?

How do ati range of laptop gfx compare?

From what I read the 9600M GT scores about 5154 in 3DMark 06.

I have been looking at the HP HDX9430 (20.1" Screen) with the 8800GTS, recently reduced to £749, its a bit big for laptop really, but I wanted a fast mobile VGA within £800 budget.

The mobility version of the ATI 4850 are suppose to be very good, but can't find any reviews when I last looked and would expect it comes at a high cost. The MSI 725 will have the ATI 4850 chip, but I'm not sure what MSI build quality will be.

The ATI mobility 3870 are good, but the top dogs are the Nvidia 9800M series.

9600GT = 8600GT with a die shrink I believe = not very good.

My laptop's 8600GT manages L4D and CoD:WaW on medium @ 1280x800.

My laptop with a 7900GS manages CoD:WaW on medium @ 1280x800 aswell. COD4 it could manage at 1440x900. I had a 7950GTX in a laptop for a while and that a decent step up.

I'd be wary of the heat problems reported with some of these newer Nvidia chips. I'd go with ATI if I was replacing mine.

I have the 512mb ddr3 version of this card in my msi gx620. L4D plays at 1440X900 all high settings with no AA or AF.

plays css at full settings and gets >60fps, but if you want the details up in other newer titles then it's not the card for you.

About the MSI build quality... yes its a little suspect but not terrible.
