i am going to buy an Asus P8Z68-V, and i was wondering what the onboard sound chip quality is like? I am a bit of a music fanatic and i am running a set of 2.1 speakers currently, so idc about 5.1 or 7.1 quality because i cannot realistically have any more than a 2.1 set right now.

Probably much the same as every other onboard sound chip. Adequate but not outstanding. Even the £20 Xonar DG is reputed by many as quite a jump from any onboard sound solution. Some boards come with X-Fi and they might be quite decent but yours has the Realtek ALC 892-8 so I doubt if it will be that awesome, my slightly older Realtek ALC 889A certainly wasn't.

The X-FI boards shouldn't sound any better as all the X-FI stuff is software driven. The actual sound hardware is the same and has nothing to do with anything X-FI, which is alittle misleading really.
