Quick version:

Compared to stand alone players...Would you say it was better or equal to a standard 100 quid sony player etc...?? or a 150 quid player etc...Or impossible to know?

Longer Version:

As my PS3 is broken I was contemplating buying a new ps3 but waiting for a price drop. I then decided I wanted to watch a Bluray and realsied I have no player lol

I then saw if I were to buy a blu ray player a sony one costs between 100-160 quid on average. Now a Ps3 is not much more expenisve.

This means that if the bluray component of the S3 was as good as the best SOny blu ray players technically you are only paying 50-100 quid to get the console which is pretty good deal.

Hold on for at least a week, sounds like a PS3 price drop incoming after gamescom next week.

funny I read months ago about a price drop at this period....then I saw 120gb model for 180-200 quid....now I see best price 320gb slim at 235-260 quid...with no games.

I got 320gb hard drive anyway. I would like slim 120-180gb for like 170 quid..that was what I heard price drop would be a few months back...I dunno though..well see

A dedicated player will be better however I doubt you will be able to tell the difference. I would go with the ps3.

You'll have to get a remote though

In what way is a dedicated player better and I don't mean bolt ons like picture zoom etc, Surely for just playing back blurays all players output the same PQ. as everything about them is digital.

I mean whats the diff between a 40 quid and a 150 wuid blu ray player?

In terms of image quality on the screen?

Surely both must be the same?

Maybe 150 quid has more functions and higher quality parts but image quality on purchase should be the same?

TV obviously have image quality differences between price ranges but actual dvd/blu ray players effect image quality?>

I've got a Samsung Blu Ray Player and the PS3 loads the discs much quicker, is less noisy when loading the disks and the picture quality is slightly better. It's also better at upscaling DVD's than my BD Player.

I don't know if it's still the case (probably is) but up until a year or so ago you had to spend £200-300 on a dedicated player to match the PS3's playback, the good thing about the PS3 is it's well supported with firmware etc.

You're right, It's a digital signal so there isn't much diff in the PQ.

There are small differences, for example the way it handles True HD and sends to your receiver as LPCM, I get annoyed and would like a blue light on my receiver :)

I don't understand this. By that logic then why is an expensive TV better than a budget TV?

Same logic, but doesn't really apply to TV's.

The signal would be the same on the Blueray, but when it comes to the TV even at the same resolution the panel may display it differently.

IE black levels, colour contrast, colors and other factors such as power usage.

Doesn't the slim bitstream HD audio properly?

The PS3 can be updated with future features.
I have a PS3 & a Samsung one, I do find the samsung one easier to navigate and slightly faster but with the benefit of games the PS3 wins.

its only worth buying a dedicated blu ray player if you are going to spending £400 on a denon one or similar.

If you're intending on buying .... say a £90 samsung one or similar. Don't bother, the PS3 is just as good.

Yes.

Its on the reasons i chopped my old fat one in for a slim (and concerns about reliability with mine being a launch day model)

But again why? After 2 weeks with any dedicated player it will be a case of put disc in, hit play, watch movie, eject and repeat.

Which is exactly why anyone considering an alternative to a PS3 should look for something like this at that price point.

http://dune-hd.com/hd_players/current/135-dune-hd-max.html. So much more than just a bluray player that that part of it becomes almost a secondary device.

I was trying to make a point that the die hard enthusiast with 10s of thousands of home cinema kit might be able to make use of the benefits from a high quality dedicated player.

But for the rest of us with say <2ks worth of kit, its not worth it.
