How good is the PS3 bluray player

i have a ps3 and a standalone sony bds360 , the only reason i have the standalone is i just prefer to use my ps3 solely for gaming also i found the phat ps3 was to noisy for viewing movies.

Now though the slim ps3 can decode hd sound and also is a lot quieter.

I was trying to make a point that the die hard enthusiast with 10s of thousands of home cinema kit might be able to make use of the benefits from a high quality dedicated player.

But for the rest of us with say <2ks worth of kit, its not worth it.

And back to the start............. what benefit does an expensive player have over a cheap player for, let's not get ahead of ourselves here, just the basic function of playing blurays?

It's good this, it makes me want to rush out and buy a £150 HDMI cable.

Actually now that I think about it my £40 blu-ray player is actually superior for playing movies as it plays a wider variety of media codecs/containers than the PS3, which is actually the main reason I bought it.

And the remote is easier to use than a controller.
And it's not loud.
And it's 4x smaller

The list keeps growing :o

One good thing though that I've just found out is that the PS3 will play AVCHD discs written on writeable media, I didn't think it would.

Bought a Panasonic standalone blu ray player (DMP BD-35) before my PS3 slim, bought the PS3 mainly for a couple of exclusive games I wanted to play, but it's pretty much taken over as my blu ray player now, much prefer it to the Panasonic, bitstreams HD audio as does the Pana but it has video and audio bitrate counters which my panasonic lacks.

No discernible difference in video and audio quality though, but lets face it, that's down to your screen, amp, speakers and the quality of the video and audio production of the blu ray film itself.

To save us the argument. I'll just copy and paste this instead.

Because i know whats coming, and i know what both sides of the fence think.

I've read on forums about this and basicaly there is no difference in PQ. The differences lie with SQ and then its usualy expensive BR players have analogue outs which in 99% of cases aren't needed as you just feed your signal by HDMI.

As long as it's the PS3 slim you can bitstream so it's the same as a standalone.

I have my PS3 slim bitstreaming audio to an Onkyo receiver and it's all good.

Interesting find but unfortunately all that article tells me is that there are some very minor differences in PQ. between players but again that then makes me think this.

How do I know that a £1000 pound players version of decoding or whatever it does is better than that of a £40 player, because again one company's preference to how it should work may be totally different to another's, and that £40 player may look better than the £1000 player.

Which again leads me to this player http://dune-hd.com/hd_players/current/135-dune-hd-max.html and why anyone would chose anything else but a player that offers that amount of features.

I remember reading an article a while ago about a £1500 CD player (at least I think it was that amount) having the lid taken off it and inside was just a standard £40 Sony (again I think it was) players gubbins. The audiophiles that were praising the clarity of the player were eating humble pie after that one.

he said I can send the still encoded audio data from blu ray to my amp to decode.

However my sound plays through the speakers on my tv. I doubt the amp in my tv is any good? If I had my blu ray connected to a powerful stereo or stand alone amp then sure it would be better?

by the sounds of it you cant get hd sound?

do you just connect straight to your tv?

yes

my ps3/blu ray goes hdmi into my hdtv.

On the other hand I watch movies through my pc with quality logitech speakers and woofer. It is much better.

Also I used to have my old ''dvd' player connected with stereo leads to my hifi and sorround speakers. That was much better.

But atm I just got my ps3/blu ray into my HDTV. Mainly because its easy for me to change volume with tv remote.
