How hard is it to snap a spring?

My S3 had developed a weird metallic clattering noise from the front near side quarter - when I went over a bump I could hear it with the window down.

I took it to Audi as the car is under warranty and they called and said I have a snapped spring.

Is this a common problem? What does it take to break one?

It can happen on a lot of cars, doesn't take much to break one if it's already weak :)

Commonly water collects in the tray type thing on the shock where the spring sits and with the coating or whatever on the spring wearing it can cause them to rust, and then the ends can snap off. Happened to my Clio a while ago.

I dont know about your Audi, but from my experience of snapped springs, not much, just bad luck.

Girl at work had a snapped front spring on her corsa, she aint a fast driver at all, she joins the motorway at 40MPh

She only found out about it though when it made contact with her tyre sending her through a hedge at 40.

My dad had a spring snap on his Capri about 7 years ago, and my mum heard it go "BANG!!!" whilst sat our living room, and the car was in the next street.

Could you not tell from how the car drove?

Snapped springs are very very common on Corsa's.

mondeo spring snapped.
but I always have drums going in and out so the front end is unbalanced really, and i dont think it took much.

127k to a set of springs isnt bad though :)

My GFs old Seat broke both of it's front springs during it's 35k lifetime. Can't say I was too impressed.

My ex GFs Seat also broke both front springs, probably cause I ragged it over speed bumps before I gave it back to her ! ha ha ha fat cow.

Yup, first thing we knew of it was when the sevice manager mentioned it. Thankfully it was repaired as part of the service though. I was quite suprised they had one in stock to sort it immediatley, but then if you say it's common it doesn't suprise me.

They actually have quite a lot "on the shelf". I've asked for things like rear mudflap mounting parts for E46 sport bumper, rear anti-rollbar stabiliser link etc. and they've had them :p
