So, when you play a game, do you select the hardcore difficulty level or the easypeasy difficulty?

At this stage I have about 50% of my games unplayed on Steam. (I am getting close to 300 games on there) The harsh reality is for most games I will struggle to find the time to complete them. I have ended up with most games now playing them at the easiest difficulty level just to get through them quickly and experience the story.

Anyone else do the same? I do play some games at harder difficulty levels but only games that I really love. I have played XCOM on the hardest difficulty and on Ironman as an example.

Hardest difficulty, but I will reduce the difficulty if it's too difficult to the extent that it makes me angry.

I'm the same as Wes. I'll play everything on the hardest difficulty, but if I find myself repeatedly failing to the point of frustration, then I may reduce the difficulty. That doesn't apply to FPS games though, I find them easier anyway so I always play them on hardest regardless of if I get stuck on a little bit, as the majority of it I just storm through.

Always on "normal". I can't help thinking that's the way the game was designed, and I've had too many experiences where upping the difficulty just turns enemies into damage sponges and reduces your health without changing much else. Games like Civ I find it's a good challenge to work up the difficulty levels, but generally I stick on normal except in those rare instances I've heard prior that the normal setting is pointlessly easy.

I tend to go for "normal" difficulty. Only usually get around 10-12 hours per month of gaming time, so don't want to get too stuck.

To be honest, "normal" is a bit easy, generally (FTL aside), but if "Hard" adds another 3 or 4 hours playtime, then that'll take me another 2 weeks, so can't really do it.

One thing I like to see in the game, and this seems most of the time now, is the ability to adjust difficulty as you go along. One thing I hate, and have been never any good at, is boss fights so I'll drop the difficulty for them.

Depends how many options there are and also the genre.

If it's Easy, Medium or Hard, normally Medium as I don't have chunks of time to throw into gamed any more. If there are 4/5 difficulty options i'll pick one lower than the hardest so I still get a decent challenge.

Depends on the game, if i want to finish it for the good story like bioshock, ill play on normal difficulty, still not on easy, but not hard.

For run and gun games, where there is only one real path, like Cod or Halo. I'll normally play the highest difficulty and take my time going through it.

For me it all depends on how the difficulty gets increased in the game.
If it's just an increase of enemy health that just draws the fights out a bit longer then I wouldn't bother increasing it and just play through the game on normal.
If it adds something extra to the game, such as an extra boss mechanic to dance around, then sign me up for nightmare mode!

I usually auto-pick the hardest difficulty and then regret it later. The difficulty becomes tedious more than actually mechanically difficult.

Between easy and normal depending on the game and how I feel.

I don't get a sense of accomplishment from completing stuff on hard, so don't bother as it just draws out the experience and/or frustrates.

usually just pick normal and play through the game, however if its something that I find myself enjoying I'll turn the difficulty up or mod it to make it more challenging and prolong the first time play through experience.

Reading the thread title, I thought I was in GD for a moment. :D

Usually on Normal difficulty as I feel that's the way the game was designed to be played. I am just a casual gamer anyway so it's good enough for me.

I set it to the hardest difficulty I am capable of playing on. But I will reduce the difficulty if I get annoyed. On World at War for example, I completed the whole game apart from the last mission, on Veteran, and had to reduce it to Hard for the last mission because I was going to explode with anger. :p

Depends on the game if harder modes just means the AI spam grenades in stupid numbers then normal otherwise hardcore.
