How have we changed from 1995/x?

Its not even funny now... They already KNEW...

so where's windows 2000?

So let's weigh up 1995 and 2013 so far: (both are pretty good years IMO)

1995 - pros

- indie / dance / jungle music and TOTP
- we had proper seasons
- Woolworths and pic'n'mix
- moving from tape to CD
- 16-bit video game era (although down to preference ofc!)

1995 - cons

- Blur vs Oasis hype in August
- only dial-up was available (unless you were in uni)
- the telephone was exxxxxxxxxxpensive!

2013 - pros

- again, had a proper summer like 1995
- venues e.g. train stations serving real coffee
- home shopping, for groceries, tickets etc
- broadband internet and web 2.0
- uptake of LED lighting
- normal TV having 100+ channels (not sure if that's really a good thing!)
- 2010s fashion is better than 1990s fashion IMO

2013 - cons

- outsourced callcentres (me being hard of hearing)
- false rape allegations and the UK's everyone-is-a-paedophile attitude
- similar to above: compensation and suing culture
- smoking ban, affecting the pub trade
- elitism in jobhunting, making it more difficult
- chart music being less creative, too much R&B (so I search for unsigned bands)

Sounds like a lot of people in this thread are bitter about getting old, rather than how bad things are now, or how supposedly good things were then.

pfft 90s was awesome.

no cctv
no shutters on shops
no police style separator grills in taxi's
police had slow response times and most of them were unfit
most people still got paid in cash
low number of digital transactions = people carried a lot of cash
cops didn't have guns
few places had sleeping policeman
most paths didn't have bollards
not much government spying
saturday morning tv used to be pretty good

vs now

cops have guns
cops are more organised and faster at responding
everywhere has CCTV
everywhere has shutters
everywhere has speed bumps
non many people carry cash
people get paid electronically
everywhere has bollards
government spies on everything
politicians are more corrupt
saturday morning tv is now crap

I enjoyed the 90's but I've also enjoyed every year after after that decade. There's something very melancholic about wishing you were living in times past or that the 'glory days' are over :(

I'm averaging one **** year per decade at the moment, 1991 sucked as did 2003 ... other than that there were enough good things per year so say that it's no worse now than then and there was nothing special about the past ...

2003 was a good year for me. I was still young, carefree, still living at home and in full time employment earning the same as what I'm earning now. :(

So was I at the start of the year ... mid-year I was within hours of being made redundant ... by the end of the year I was living in a completely different part of the country (and days after relocating I was told the job I was doing was not what I had been told prior to the move) ... stressful times ...

i genuinely believe the music being made in 1995, all genres, was better than it is today. some of the best house, trance, dnb, indie, rock i've ever heard was made in the earl to mid 90's.

i was 15 in 1995 and had nothing to worry about other than school work and doing my paperround and whether i wanted a pair of ellesse or kickers for the new school year. and who was going to buy my bottle of rascal on friday night,if i was going to cop off with a bird and whether the 'kiddy lads' would be down to cause trouble.

happy days :)

Is there such a thing as "good" house, trance or dnb ? :p

absoloutely.

the beauty of it imo is just how it was made. we're talking atari st's in peoples bedroom's being made on a very early reason or cubase and then saved onto a floppy disc for mastering to vinyl. pretty magic imo compared to today's mac's and studio's.

I agree ref the above posts pinpointing certain years inbetween 1995 and 2013.

For me (all for personal reasons though):

Good years - 1995, 1999, 2001, 2006 and 2008.

1995 because of music, GCSE results and 6th form.
1999 because of best holidays, uni life and getting online.
2001 because of the clubbing honeymoon.
2006 because of getting onto the property ladder and "vanilla" Warcraft :p
2008 because of fairground and themepark honeymoon.

Rubbish years - 1997, 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2012.

1997 because nothing happened in 1997. 1997 is a void. Blackhole. Nil. Zip.
2002 because I only just passed my degree and spent 6 months on the dole.
2007 because of bullying fundamentalist boss and health problems.
2009 because our company folded, went on the dole, lost Gran.
2012 because I lost 2 computers, my boiler and problems with O2 fraud. Was therefore skint all year.
