How hot is too hot?

Last night I was gaming away for a fair few hours over the old tinterweb and suddenly my pc cuts out. Or rather it seemed that my graphics card did in a sense that the pc was still running but there was no display coming from the card (it came up with the no signal info on the monitor).

I have a feeling this may have been due to the card being too hot, once I had restarted it, the card read 85degrees (according to realtemp). Is this acceptable or do I need to look into better cooling?

The card is a 9800gt amp edition, just so you know :)

Many thanks!

personally i would get better cooling but if there is no artifacts or anything on the screen you might be able to get away with it as i tihnk they can take a little more then that i thought anyways might be wrong about how much they can take though and what case you got cause that can be a big factor with these things

Its a fairly poor case, but there should be fairly good air flow in it I do believe...Could be wrong though :p

I have absolutely no idea when it comes to graphics card coolers. Any to look for/avoid?

That temperature is within manufacturing limits, but I'd try to keep it under 80C. If that's at stock, then it's overheating. Download 'EvgaPrecision' from Guru3D or RivaTuner and manually increase the fan speed to see if this makes a difference.

That is at stock yes, but as its the amp its pre overclocked. Ok thanks i'll give tho programs a go also!

Any ideas on coolers also?

If you went down the route of an aftermarket cooler, then something like these two would be ideal.

For the Thermalright, you would need a 120mm fan to attach to it for it to cool the 8800GT properly. Something like this:-

Ok I have installed that evga program thing, and also added another monitor so I could watch the temps on that whilst I game. It went up to 98! So, I have added an extra fan and moved my hard drives round a bit so there is actually some air flow going towarads the card now. The fan isnt very powerful tho, so I will replace this. It still gets up to 91 now though so I'm thinking a gpu cooler of some description will be needed afterall :(

Hmm not sure which to go for, it doesnt say if it fits a 9800gt, I assume its the same size as 8800?

Regarding the thermalright one, would this fit my 9800gt? Need to know quite soon as I intend to order tonight if poss!
Thanks

According to the Zalman and Thermalright websites, both of those coolers will fit your card. I'd have thought the Thermalright, with a fan, would give the best results.

Although the graphics card should still not be going that high at idle or load, unless you have absolutely no airflow. I would consider returning the card, at least before trying aftermarket coolers, because the cooler may not help, and then you would be out of warranty to return it.

Well I have never had my pc crash on me before, but I've also never checked the temps during gaming so I cannot compare it to previous. I shall sort out my case fans first then before I buy a gpu cooler, though I think I'll go with the thermalright as the Zalman has blue LEDs :p
