OK so i have an ASUS GeForce GTX 560 Direct CU ...im thinking how hto should it be when idle ???....Speedfan tells me its around 46c that sound about right ??

Idle temps are largely irrelevant, it's load you should be interested in. 46c isn't that cool mind you, have you checked GPUz to make sure it's clocking down when it should?

Dual monitors is the reason, your gpu runs at higher clocks using dual monitors.

You could give it a clean out with compressed air and a non synthetic paint brush, do the rest of the fans in your case while your at it and it might reduce temps a touch.

OK...ive only just installed some new fans actually ...and i did give the card and the whole case a once over :)

also i have a utility called asus smart doctor ?...i do use it when im gaming to keep the temps down .....without using that temps go above 55c .

Try with just the one screen? Those temps aren't going to do the card any harm but the extra fan noise might be a bit annoying

Fermi will happily chug along in the high 80s for years so I wouldn't worry about it.

Having 2 monitors means the card doesn't downclock to the minimum when you're idling so temps will be higher, was around 10c higher for me. Load temps are the same.
