How important is 144hz for 1440p gaming?

Hi,

Aftet I built a new PC powered by GTX1080, my monitor is useless at showing potential of the card.

Currently have an old 22" Samsung (can sell for 15£ if lucky) but looking for something in the range of 27" at 1440p resolution.
Ideally, of course a 1440p 144hz G-Sync Money Printing (better be :D) monitor...but the price of them make me reconsider, so...

Considering I dont want to give up on the idea of 1440p especially if screen is gonna be around 27", how important is it to have a 144hz monitor to go with that resolution?

I don't play much of fast FPS games, in fact, at the moment its mostly PUBG and Path of Exile with some friends. Although looking to buy Battlefield 1.

I mean anything will be better than current screen but question is, is it worth saving for all the bells and whistles like 144hz and g-sync or will just a 1440p 60hz screen do its justice?

Is GTX1080 capable of that resolution with no problems or G-Sync is necessary these days?

Thanks in advance and if anyone has any suggestions for 27" 1440p monitors, Ill appreciate your opinions.

P.S - budget is something I cant decide on, I would say lower is better but can look at something higher end if it will be REALLY worth it, end of the day, GTX1080 costed me 550£ :D

It all depends on your games. High refresh rates are great. Going from 30Hz on a console to 60Hz on a PC is a night and day change, once you pass 90Hz it all becomes a bit of a dong dangling competition.

So if you are playing a lot of shooter games or racing games then you will really benefit from a higher refresh rate, whereas a slower paced adventure game will not "feel" much different to a regular 60Hz display.

I had a 1080p G-Sync 144Hz display that died so I thought I would "upgrade" 1440p but it is only 60Hz. I do miss the high refresh rate and wish I had spent a little bit more on one. Perhaps I will wait a little longer until new graphics cards and 4K high refresh rate displays become more commonplace.

For you I would suggest looking at the games you expect to play most before jumping in on a new display.

Ah, thats what I am worried about, i will save few notes but in the end, I will nag myself knowing I could have went for better and regret not having higher refresh rate.

Games are tricky, I could play one game for months then get hooked onto completely different games genres. I do play Insurgency at times, which is an FPS and as I said, might try out BF1. So I guess 144hz is kinda "necessary"?

Thats the tricky question, its like if ill end up spending too much money and sit there thinking "did i really need this option that made me spend 200 more?"
For budget sake, lets say 500£ and below. But of course, cheaper options are more than welcome.

I think 27" will be the sweet spot.

Didn't consider 165Hz but i guess it come along with those kind of monitors:)

Yeah after some reading on here about IPS lottery, dont feel like participating as it will be frustrating sending it back and forth and knowing there are such issues.

I will look into these two, although 27" one looks the business. If only they weren't so pricy :D

Thank you, sir!

I do like the 27" Acer...just cant seem to find it anywhere else, either an IPS or a 4K version.

God knows how long this one will be out of stock here :/

Freesync one is 60Hz, right?

It's a pity that you can't test out the games that you do play at 144hz, there are some people Wii claim that they can't tell the difference from 60hz and others who would buy nothing less.
The same can be claimed for Gsync, some notice and hate screen tearing whilst others don't care.

Then again the same could apply with me. I'm still using my three years old BenQ 27" IPS at 1440p, monitor overclocked to 72hz. That is coupled with my Ti1080.
I did try a 4k 32" but that didn't turn out well. The Ti is a good card but, apart from it's price, I don't consider it a high end card, especially with 4k.
Ultrawide seems a bit of a marmite aspect ratio, with issues.
That seems to leave higher refresh rate monitors or just keeping as I am. At least at 1440p and 72hz the Ti can hold a solid 72fps with all the games that I have played so far, some tho with high eye candy settings can push it some. Gsync would be wasted on my situation.

Went from a 1080p 144hz BenQ TN monitor to X34A while the colours were amazing compared to my TN, The Ultrawide aspect ratio was alright, 100hz stuck out to my like a soar thumb, I will never drop below 144hz, So I sent it back in wait for a good ultrawide with higher Hz.

I now have a Viewsonic XG2703-GS - 27 inch, IPS, 1440p, G-Sync, 165Hz, Bought it used from the rainforest, Love it.

You must have some very high end graphics set up. Crossfire Vega?
