How is Android different to the Iphone OS?

As topic really...is there any real difference?

I have never owned an Android phone or an iPhone so i am looking for a few basic tips. So what are the main diffences?

I had a go on my friend's Samsung Galaxy and an iPhone a few months ago and they appear pretty similiar. :o
 
Largest difference is the level of customisation possible. iOS tends to be "locked down" in terms of what you can and cannot do with it. With Android you can change almost anything especially when rooted.
 
customisation is nice, but for me i just like the fact you aren't being told what you can and can't do with your phone like apple do with theirs.

The key point is customisation, to be fair, aside from apps Android is far, far better for most people. Many iPhone lovers consider it 'hassle' to set some things up for example, when in reality it takes about the same time as on the iPhone.

With regard to apps, I don't really see what the fuss is about, Android is only behind really when it comes to games, and not everyone plays games on their phone.

The iPhone is a better choice when it comes to music (not all media, just music) too, due to the iPod built in which is very nice. Android really needs to sort a solid music player out.

As an example, Widgets are just superb, with 7 homescreens you can basically have everything displayed without having to open up applications and so forth.

Aside from that, the iPhone is not priced well enough at the moment, it is considerably more than the Desire for example, its just stupid.
 
cant say i have felt the need to customise everything, or tbh anything, on my iphone.
android users go on about customisation, yet i dont see the point beyond some colours and a background.

Good post :). To add to this, the Android OS is having some significant upgrades in the future which will further improve the whole experience. There's a a lot of development time going into Android to constantly improve it which is always a plus :)

Until you've actually seen and used it, you might not fully understand why it's benificial, but believe me, its far better.

The iPhone will have it soon enough, I'm sure.

Have a look at some of the mobile 'desktops' here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725145

It's not just colours and backgrounds, you can have all sorts of weather, clock, system information etc widgets on your homescreen without having to open apps.

it probably will, i have seen and used it. played with a desire for a few hours. went back to my iphone and decided to wait for an iphone4 rather than move to android.
my iphone isnt my first smartphone, having customised others a little i still dont miss it with my iphone

so? for 99% of that it takes 1 click anyway. have no need for knowing the weather anywhere generally, no need for system info cluttering up my home screen. its an extra click away should i need anything like that.
its only a small percentage of users who will actually want to do anything like that with their phones, the rest have no interest :p
 
Sidewinder, let me give you some honest advice.

You're really best off hauling yourself down to your local Orange/O2/Vodafone/T-Mobile shop and having a play with the phones for yourself. The really only similarity between the two is that they have a "grid" of icons. Everything else is different.

So honestly, go have a play. :)

Seems abit unfair to mention rooting and not Jailbreaking as you can do lots of customisation when the iphone is jailbroken.

Well, its not for everyone. Just like smartphones aren't for everyone. Many people will just say whats the point of all that its just a phone.

Android just takes customisation one step further, you may not like it, but it is better, and more innovative.
