Ok quick question...

I have a 7900GT that i brought a couple years ago when eveyone was buying these bad boys.

How does it stack up on todays games. Can it still play newish games at reasonable settings or is it just poo now?

I used to play doom 3 and HL 2 and stuff on it fine at max settings so i am guessing that if i picked up a new game i could still give it a good bash at native widescreen resolutions without putting everything to max?

I have a Q6600 and 2GB of ram.

well i have a 7800gt which can play cod4 high settings (though no shadows, or specular mapping-which looks okay i guess but not the best) with about 60 - 70 fps average and lowest about 40 and thats on a 32 player server.

oh and thats with 2xaa and 1440x900 res

The resolution and games really depend on it...

If you are running a 1920x1200 on Crysis its not going to go well, but if you wanted to play something like Stalker at 1440x900 then should be ok.

But then it also depends on what is your definition of "reasonable" settings. One persons reasonable might be all high and no AA, others might be all medium... ?

nVIDIA series 7 was not really all that good and hasnt aged that well.

With that said, unless you try and play a game and you see that it doesnt cut it anymore there is no need to upgrade just yet. New hardware comes out all the time.

and is coming in about a month...

True. Since the OP has a very good CPU he may as well keep his current card and then upgrade to the new ones which are released next month.

I guess the other option is an 8800GT now, but with the new cards coming and he already has an "ok" card and hasn't mentioned a game he really wants to play through, he may as well do the waiting game :)

Well I'm on a well oc'd 7900gt and I run at 1920x1200 - does OK for RPS and racing games (namely trackmania)

Though I'm tempted to save for a 9800

Iv got my 7800gt running at 1680x1050 and it copes with all games from about 2 years ago on max seetings (apart from quake 4 as it only has 256meg ram on board) which isnt too bad. Can do medium to high on more recent games, which also isnt too shabby considering its 2-2 and a half years old (considering it was £200 and money really well spent at the time). Newer Nvidia cards are out soon though, which should help a lot...
