1 x Maxtor 6V300F0 DiamondMax 10 300GB 7200RPM SATA II 16MB Cache - OEM

1 x LG GDR-8164BL 16x52 DVD-ROM Internal IDE (Black) - OEM

Anyone know any software which is optimized for dual core that will allow me to convert raw AVI files from a digital camcorder into mpeg2 dvd format?

How long do you think it will take with this setup? 30mins for a 2 hr avi file?

My old pc is a pentium 4 2ghz northwood, 1gb pc2100 ddr ram, so I think this new pc is a breath of fresh air! :D

Is my setup windows vista ready? Will it run fast?

It can't be fully Vista ready in that you don't have a DX10 graphics card, they aren't commercially available yet though. It will run reasonably fast at stock speeds but once you overclock it then yes it should run fast(it is all relative mind, what is fast to me might not be fast to you or vice versa).

As for how long it will take to encode it depends greatly on what software you use. I'm afraid I don't have any to recommend unfortunately as it isn't something that I use my PC for.

Depends on the quality you require for the video compression. To be honest, I use virtualdub for importing the avi and doing the editting work and then frameserving that out to tmpgenc for mpeg2 encoding. If I see any pixelation I get well mad so I use tmpgenc 2 pass feature at 10bits best quality.

If I require absolute top end quality, I'll use CCE with a high pass VBR something like 5

Wouldnt have gone for these two bits of kit at all, the DM 10s are very unreliable and some people dont have great record with Hiper

Its good to make people feel pleased about what they just spent there money on.

Nice one
