8000kbps is only an 8 Meg connection.
yeh and how many of us with an 8mbps actually ever get those speeds?
Ours at home is meant to be 10 and it rarely goes faster than 300kbps!

As csmager and morfmedia have already pointed out. It's down to the service provider in this case JANET UK who provide the SJ5 backbone and the regional network operator, who will provide the onward connection to the end site.
Most of it is delivered over leased fibre circuits, therefore have no contention other than the users of the network. As tolien also noted, in order to reduce the cost of bandwidth local caching is also used at most, probably all end sites. The costs are astronomical for the rental of these circuits.

What calculations did you do to derive that?
8×10, by the looks of it. More accurately would've been 8×8=64Mb. Still points towards a 100Mb connection though.
As people have said with big fat pipes, we recently turned up a 10GigE from Dublin to New York 
Obviously there is no point in having big fat pipes in isolation, everybody need to have them or you are brought down to the lowest common denominator.
The AMSIX (the largest Internet Exchange in the world) has peaked at 346 Gbps !

Why on earth would you times 8 by 10 to convert 8000Kb in Mb?
To go from Kb into Mb you devide through by 1024.
8000 / 1024 = 7.8125Mb - 8Mb
I don't know where you lads are getting 100Mb from.
x10 was incorrect. as I said, it should have been x 8.
8MB/s × 8 = 64Mbps. Therefore the connection is likely to be 100Mbps.
If you did want to absolute, you would indeed take 8000/1024 (instead of an 8Mb estimate!) and get 7.8125 × 8 = 62.5Mbps.

The first 8 posts had already established it was 8000KB/s and not 8000kbps. I think we can excuse the typo.
Please read the tread properly. He was quoting me on something I said before we established we were talking in bytes.
