How is this build?

Ok, my mate has seen how awsome PC games are and he now wants to build a PC. He has asked me to come up with a spec that's not going to get hot, and will play games like BC2. How is this spec? Any changes i should make? Thanks

He doesn't want to go over 1k and he has a HD already.

Why are you fitting an aftermarket GPU cooler?

Have you fitted such items before, and quite happy to invalidate your friends warranty?

Rest of the build looks okay, what HD does he have and do you already have an OS planned for the build or should one be purchased also?

Get these instead:

i7 920 D0
Corsair XMS3
HIS iCooler 5850
Coolermaster CM-690 II
OCZ 600w ModXstream
Gelid Tranquillo
MX-3

Loose the GPU cooler unless you REALLY need it. At least until the warranty is gone.

Looks good, only alteration I'd make would be to go for a Corsair psu on a system that expensive, can't afford to skimp on the most important component.

HX 650 is about £100 on here i believe

As others have said, the GPU cooler is really not needed. Also if he's not overclocking, the retail CPU comes with its own cooler, and that will do fine - no need for an extra one.

Use those savings to help upgrade the graphic card to a 5870.

Personally, if I was building a machine just for gaming, I'd be happy to drop the i7 to an i5 750 (and save money on RAM too) to improve the graphic card. The 750 performs fairly similarly - even, sometimes better, than the 930's predecessor the 920 in games.

Any of these power supplies would be sufficient for that build

Antec TruePower New 650w
Corsair HX650
OCZ ModXstream 600w
Seasonic X-650

All of those are at least 600w, modular and from reputable companies.

Indeed they do, Seasonic make brilliant PSUs, however OCZ are very good if you are on a budget.
