How is this for a first ever build?

Not a major issue anyway if you ask me. I mean say you have a Gigabyte UD4 or above and an sli/x-fire setup - your 'crippled' USB3 is still 5x faster than USB2, and SATA3 reducing back to SATA2 speed is only going to restrict the very fastest SSDs. No biggy. Besides, when this sudden need for full USB3/SATA3 speed arises for whatever reason, you aint gonna be gaming, so you can just switch to full-speed 'Turbo' USB3/SATA3 cos you wont be using your dual GPUs.

Or use an ASUS board. And I believe MSI use a bridge chip too.

USB 3.0 drops to USB 2.0 as well. I agree though, as it's unlikely to be used when gaming anyway. The issue is going to come when SSD's start using Sata 3 especially with the boards that drop the main PCI-e slot down to 8x. It's mainly going to hurt people with a single slot, dual gpu card such as the 5970 though.

Well I just lost a load from my chest. Was also going to fork out £140 for a 23" monitor, but my uncle who works in a computer repair just said I could have his old 19" for free :) Drop in resolution yeah, but its £140....
