How is this mod done to the fractual r4 case

Pretty well explained at the end of the video I'd say.

Kept the original blue power LED but added the HDD activity LED nearby, reducing it's brightness a bit with a resistor :)

A 4k7 (4700 ohm) 0.25 watt resistor can be obtained from any electronic supplier, it is a standard value. (0.25w-0.5w or 1/4w-1/2w will do.)

What do you have near you? I.e. Maplins

The resistor will cost far less than the postage.

Perhaps you can find one in some old equipment.
It will have colour bands Yellow-violet-red and then another to indicate the tolerance.
See http://www.matni.com/Arabic/Elec-Info/RES COLOR/resistor.htm for more info.

Another way this could be done is using a RGB led with 4 prongs. Two of which would be connected to the normal case led wires to power the led in the color red and negative. Then the hdd wire connected to the prong that controls the red on the rgb led. Planning to do this on my current rig.

Surely that is going to give you the normal power AND the HDD led colours at the same time.

AFAIK If you wanted them to be separate then you would need some form of switching for it.

Nah it does work. Got it running at the moment the led stays red, and when the hard drive activity is happening it changes to a yellow, activity stops it fades back to red. One side of the LED has a dominant color so even if both sides are powered only one color will show.

Only a quick demo of how it works, saves me having to re-cable manage.

Black wire is equal to negative, red is the positive.

Battery is just to demo it, in reality one red wire would be coming from you hard drive led wire and the other from your power button led wire on your case.

when you're powered on, the LED will be lit red. When you activate the switch as seen in the picture or the hard drive led would flicker. The LED seen above will flash yellow. You will have to try switching the two legs with the red wires as different LEDs have a more dominant color.

Maybe some one with more expertise in electronics could advise if a resistor needs to be placed in the circuit, however I haven't had any problems.

This only really works as one color of the dual color (rgb) led has a dominant color and this is the color you use for your HDD LED.

When I get some more time I will make a video and parts list of the project, however currently all you will need is a dual color LED and some wire.

Any further info on this crypto?

Phil what did you do in the end?

I've a Define R4 with a Red power LED, I'm changing it to blue and fitting the RED to HDD activity (fitting in place of the mic & headphone sockets as I don't need them).
