How is ubuntu on old pc's?

Either the live cd or installed.

I just need a PC to be used strictly for broswing, would this be a sutible os?

dont see why not, it wont be very fast but you knew that allready..

I installed it on a Celeron 300mhz with 256mb ram.
It takes a loooong time to load to the desktop but once it has it runs surprisingly well for web browsing and office tasks.

I've run it on machines of similar spec. If you need a GUI, dump the Gnome desktop in favor of fluxbox. It'll make it loads quicker.

have a look at xubuntu. it uses a lightweight desktop, its listed on distrowatch.

I tried it on my laptop (266MHz/160MB) and the desktop (Gnome) is very sluggish so I'd try the above suggestions if I were you.

I would use XFCE, not gnome on a old pc like that!
