How is your grade calculated for a university degree?

Just been talking to a friend and i assumed that it was an average of the percentage of all of your marks which will then give a specific percentage therefore showing ultimately what grade you have received. However a friends stated that it was based on not a percentage average across all your marks but on an average of your grades. For example if you receive 4x2:1 and 2x 1st's your overall grade would be a 2:1 even if you received 69% for all 4 2:1 and 95% for the 1st's. Can someone confirm this for me?

At Staffs uni, my mark weightings were year 1 0%, year 2 30%, year 3 70%. It'll vary from uni to uni. My sister had something like 10/30/60 weighting for her 3 years.

Ours is just for the third year due to that it was two seperate degrees as such. First two years was a foundation degree and then you re-applied (only if you were successful on the foundation degree) to do the BA

Well the year before me people were on 100% for just their third year which I thought was a little silly, although changed it now with 20/80% split. We also get 5 of your best modules out of 6 selected in second year so if you dropped the ball one of the modules (like I did with 58%!) you can still aim towards a first.

It is worked out using a % of each years modules and your final project/dissertation. Say you do a 4 year course, then your 3rd and 4th years will have a slightly higher weighting of % towards your classification than your 1st and 2nd years.

@OP - the answer to your question varies and is dependent on your uni and your course.

1st year doesn't count at a lot of universities.

A common split is 2:3 or 1:2 2nd year:3rd year

with some 4 year courses something like 2:3:3

0% 1st year
10% 2nd year
20% 3rd year
70% 4th year

This is for pharmacy at sunderland.

For us each year carries a set weight (apart from first year, so it's made up of years 2, 3, and 4). Each year has 12 modules (apart from year 3, but that's not important), and the year's mark is an average of each module's mark (as each module carries equal weighting).

Your final mark is then the combination of each year's mark and that year's weighting.

On my degree it was the average of all marks in year 2 and years 3, weighted 30:70 for year 2:year 3

OR

The average of the year 3 marks

whichever was the greater.

Also, there was a proviso that the final year project was passed and no more than 1 module could be condemned. ( I can't remember if you could actually condemn any final year module, or if it was only a 2nd year module.)

First Year 10%, Second Year 30%, Third year :0%, Fourth Year : 40%.

Damn being made to go and work for a year and get "industry experience"

Did you mean 10/20/0/70? What you gave adds up to 70%. And yeah, I took the placement year as well between years 2 & 3, but I just counted the 3 years that I was studying.

80% actually :D.

Did you not do any assessed work during your placement year?

Ahh yes, I did get visited once on my year out and I had to do a class presentation of it when I returned in year 3. Although I got a grade B for it, I didn't count towards my degree class. It just changed the title of my degree slightly... something like B(Eng.) in Electronic Engineering with sandwich placement.
