How is your yearly holiday time from work arranged?

Just wondering what your work policy is like regarding how you take your holiday time?

I was promised that I could have a month off at the end of last year and it never came to be, instead my boss takes a holiday and I end up having take a large portion of my Holiday time in two and three day segments which is useless to me as I can't really go away, I'm just wondering if this is the norm with some companies.

You always seem to get trodden all over in every thread :/

I can book as I wish, providing I give notice and there are no outstanding reasons why I can't.

Company policy is to give as many days notice as you want off.

As long as the team leader is in as I cover for them (technically I am their boss), I can take any time.

Once it's booked, they ain't cancelling it.

I ask my current project team if it's OK. Then raise the request to my companies HR stating that agreement has been made with said team.

Have never have had annual leave denied, touch wood!

It really does depend on the company. The only legal obligation is that you get the minimum - they get to chose when you take it. Most companies will at least let you have input, usually by a request/reject/approve type process, but there are a few who will take the **** because they can.

Next time you get told you can have a holiday, get it in writing would be my suggestion.

Same here as long as I've gave 2 weeks notice I can book what I like.

Same here, although I imagine there maybe a problem with me taking large chunks if there is something planned that may involve me as I'm the only one in the company with any experience in what I do but luckily that's not been a problem yet.

Sounds like maybe the boss could be making up his own rules. Is there anyway you can find out the official company rules?
At my company, there is a company handbook detailing everything which is available to all employees. Either hardcopy on request or stored on the network at all times.

For me, I just dictate my own because i'm the only one who knows my job anyway. But obviously I just inform my boss regardless and let her know out of courtesy.
Company policy states 1 week notice for any time off but for odd days I usually just take them the day before as it's often an unplanned need.

For longer holidays I just book my holiday and tell them when I'm going but if I was part of an actual team then they us a calendar so that they can see when others are off and are just requested to try and book when others are in where possible.

Whenever I like really, I just ask for it. As long as I'm not screwing over the department by taking 3 weeks off during the busiest time of the year or something.

After my work van broke down i was chatting to the AA guy about holidays and he said the company tell him when he can have his annual leave! If you want to book specific time off you have to give over 12 months notice.
He seemed fine with that?!

Within 2 weeks after the end of the financial year we are expected to pre-book atleast half of our holiday allowance for the year ahead - but we can adjust that at a later date with twice the time as notice. This is mostly due to so many people ending up taking a whole month off between jan and march to use up their holiday allowance otherwise. We get told the odd week they won't accept holiday for various reasons i.e. staff training days during that week, etc. but otherwise its fairly flexible as it should be.

I get 23 days holiday. I can take it whenever i want, but any holiday longer than 2 weeks consecutive has to be approved by HR and not just your manager. I just have to make sure that one other person i work with is not taking a holiday at the same time.

I can only book time off if no one else in the team is off which makes it a ballache. We're allowed the odd day overlap, but that's it. There's 4 (soon to be 5) in our team. We only get 20 days so it's not like we have a massive amount. We also can't take more than 2 weeks in one go without the ok from the head honcho - not that I've ever needed this.

I tend to try and book it all right at the beginning of the year as it can be a pain to fit it around everyone else.

All in all. The holiday arrangement at my place sucks :(
