How likely is it that games bought on xbox live marketplace or psn network will work on the next generation of console. I'm very tempted to start downloading my games rather than buying them in shops. I just don't like the idea of building a library and losing it to the next console installment.

Theres no real guarantee that the next set of consoles will be backwards compatible - Im sure if they are, then digital content from the relevant stores should follow suit otherwise Id expect quite the uproar and a (short term?) negative effect on future digital purchases...

They like to add backwards comparability if they can but there are never any guarantees.

If Sony were to move away from the Cell for some reason then it's likely that any PS3 games wouldn't work because of the unique architecture that it has though many consider that unlikely.

Regardless, when the PS4/Xbox 3 come out your current machines won't suddenly stop working and your current library won't suddenly vanish. Both will work fine so you've not lost anything.

It's in their interests however to have backward comparability at the start of a new generation just to ensure there is a healthy library of games for people to play.
