How long can you expect to drive for?

I was wondering in the actual practical test which is 40 minutes, how much is actually spent driving normally? I mean after doing the show me/tell me, manouvers, emergency stops etc?

If you take as long as possible(without being TOO slow) on manouvers, does that mean less driving time?

Thanks.

Your probably going to do about 25-35mins driving on your test, it doesnt actually feel all that long once your doing it.

No, they generally have a pretty set route they will take you on and will stick to it so doesnt matter how fast or slow you go. I recieved a minor for travelling too slowly on my test :)

So say if there was traffic on the test route..which involed just rolling along and stopping occasionaly, and this lasted for the test duration would that be it or would you make you drive even more?

If you pulled out the test centre, got stuck in 45mins of traffic and managed to get back that would be your test done.

I would say it would have a lot to do with the discretion of the tester.

aye, it flys by.

but you cant go too slow on your manouvers though. because that would be marked down...

When I took my test there was a traffic jam heading out of Nottingham as it was peak time (the direction I was going). He told me to turnaround in a car park and we went a different route. :)

Driving slowly will not reduce your test time - only pick up minor marks.

Ah i see. I need to learn all the show me/tell me questions :/
They are not too difficult, my instructor ran over them the week before my test and on the lesson prior to my test, no problems at all.

My instructor is going to go over them just before my test

The school run begins at around 2.30 doesnt it?

That's the easy part. Most of it is pure common sense so providing you know the engine bay, there's not much you really need to "learn".

The DSA website has some pretty useful info and you can now even find the various routes they do. Go to: http://www.dsa.gov.uk/atozdtcinfo.asp?cat=38 and just select your test centre. It has waiting times and routes on the right.

Thanks, just had a look at some of the routes and im trying to follow them with google earth lol..:p

My instructors car was really simple, big bit of plastic over everything, hole for oil, screenwash etc and it was all labelled up. My questions were on the handbrake and the tyre tread min depth i think.

You'll be fine.

I did about 40 mins of driving on my test, only manouvers were reversing round a corner and bay parking.
