How long can you hold your beath?

It's strange as going under water should theoretically be slightly easier as it reduces heart rate due the mammalion reflex

Probably down to panic like Freefaller says

Bit of a debate about that as one lung full of air is at ambient pressure, so your PPo2 intake should in theory be the same as if sat on the boat holding your breath.
HOWEVER, whilst you hold your breath, you are not flushing the nitrogen out at all.

Hmm, I see what you saying although I think I would rather play it safe :)

My mate who runs iron mans and marathons can only hold it for 2 minutes sitting still so I'm sorry but there's a lot of BS'ing going on.

I used to swim a lot when I was a kid, always swimming underwater and having to hold my breath for long times (front crawl). 17 now (still physically active) and I would like to edit my time to a new personal record, 2:45 :D

For all you know there could be more active people than your friend here :(

2-3 minutes probably achieveable by even most unfit people just case of relaxing yourself, of course being underwater most people find it hard to relax.

never really timed myself but be over 2 minutes at least, can do 2 30 metre lengths of a swimming pool underwater without pushing off at the start. or diving in or anything.

When you guys hold your breath, do you do with full lungs or empty lungs? I can manage about a minute with empty lungs, about a minute and a half with full lungs.
