How long can you visit a country for?

Hello there...Not sure how many can shred light on this matter.

I, basically, am thinking of going to Canada for a little while...This may be a couple of weeks, a month, or more...It really does all depend.

Now my question, how long can someone stay over there? Before requiring a Visa or anything? I think I 'might' be correct in saying you don't need one initially for short holidays etc? (Being a british citizen) But hwat about if you end up staying a bit longer?

Also, how do one way flights work...As I may do that as well, as I am not entirely sure how long I will be going for exactly. Would you get asked questions? That sort of thing? Can they stop me from flying by just having a one way ticket.

I'm aware you need working Visa's to physically work over there, however I don't believe I will be...Unless I start travelling obviously, then money will start to become a problem.

If anyone can give some usefull information, it would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks Kemik, I have been looking around on the first link for a little while now :)

However I will look at the bottom one now....It just confuses me when it says thing's like: NOTE: British Subjects and British Protected Persons also require a visa to visit or transit Canada <<<That is under the part of countries that need a visa to visit though...

Thanks for the info as well G-Man :)

i only glanced over it quickly but i dont think you need a visa at all. Just need to prove you have a place to return to in your country of citizenship and can prove you have enough money for your stay and return home

Thanks as well :)

I read that last night I believe also...To which my answers are yes...Does that mean I need some form of constant income to my bank then? Or I just need to have enough to cover myself while over there. (And enough to get back obviously)

Thanks for all the info and links so far guys :)

My only worry is the fact I'll be going over there with no job to go back to...No idea if that will be an issue? I have a home and family to come back to, so you know.

I might just be going for 3 weeks now...or longer if I desire to.

Canada is a maximum of six months as a British citizen, on a holiday.

Still up to Immigration as to what they issue you, and they may ask to see prove of funds or places to stay.
I know people who would hop back and forth across the border everytime theirs expired. Though they eventually start asking questions.

Well, I'm going to see a friend over there...If that helps, and only for 3 weeks probably...Depends.

So the 6 months is via just booking a flight, and going on holiday like any other person? Or would I have to prove I'm going to see a friend as no hotel is booked...never done this sort of thing before you see.

You are fine if you have a flight back...

It's more if you turn up, have no evidence of nowhere to stay or funds and no return flight.

Hmm...Dang :(

How would I go about doing this then? I read you can have a letter written for you to show passport control (or whatever area will be reading it) saying where you are staying etc as well...

The lack of return flight is merely if I wish to stay out there another week or so I guess...And my lack of funds due to my amazing employer doing me over :(

Watching that border force TV show I would say anywhere from 1 day to 'until they catch you'.

Catch me? I'm not someone trying to run away for god sake :p

Just want to go visit a friend, however I may stay a little longer than planned.

: Indeed...However I have found an airline that goes there cheap, and buying two tickets separately isn't that costly...I see what you mean though, I would have to look in to it.

But no, I am not a student or recent graduate sadly...Just been made redundant, and to be honest I want to go off and see a friend before I get stuck in another dead end job.

That's another thing, what sort of part-time / contract jobs could you do for a short period of time here? Just for a couple of weeks or so, if that...Just to get a little bit of side cash?
