As the title states, how long do you expect them to last?
Only asking as our current machine is giving up on us, we have had two and a half years.. our last machine lasted 7 years, i would be happy with 5years.

Personally I'd say 5 years at a minimum. Our current Bosch has lased 19 years and is still going. For the last 8 years it's been used at least and sometimes twice a day (family of 4).

Our current one a hoover has been a pile of ........ sense we got it to be honest. I have now had enough of it, it was not cheap at the time either. Our last machine was a cheap Becko that we brought when we first moved in together and that machine saw a hard life. Our current is used daily family of 4, but we have tried to look after this one.

Current machine (Samsung) is about 7 years old and survived a flat to house move too. :)

Of course now that i've posted this you have killed it so thanks for that. :D

Make sure you use calgon or some other brand alternative, as it does keep them going longer.

Even an independent washing machine technician confirmed that to me when my last one needed repairing.

Cheap 2-4 years
Expensive 4-8 years

Now there are factors to consider like how many times a week it may get used and how many people are in the family. An engineer came out to ours due to failure and said we pretty much got 6 years of use in 2 1/2 years due to how much washing we got through

This. More so than ever these days than when I was a seller of said machines many years ago. The brands are still around but takeovers & buyouts have narrowed the big manufacturers down to a handful.

British made? Have a look here.

It won't be long though before OldCoals turns up with his usual LG recommendation.

How much did you pay for the machine, how long was the warranty and what make and model did you buy?

If you bought a washing machine for less than £300 and expect it to last for 5 years or more, your expectations are not realistic these days, I'm afraid.

I’ve got a four year old Beko which is fine (especially given it cost under £200 when new) it’s used at least once a day, every day, often far more.

My parents have a Hotpoint that I remember them buying when I was at school - in 1984! - it’s still going strong!

Our John Lewis (rebadged hotpoint I think?) one must be about 5 years old now. It's holding up well. It gets upset if you overload it with towels and won't spin them, but apart from that it's fine. Family of four, with a daughter who has more costume changes than the oscars.

Cost about £450 in a sale at the time and paid via Credit card, its been out of warranty by about 6 months.

>5 years is what I'd expect from a run off the mill brand. If going fancy I don't think 10 years is unreasonable, but that's if proper use/care is take into account

they don't last these days because morons overload them.

it says 4kg and that is the "wet weight" not dry weight. so they shove 10kg of dry clothes in there at a time and wonder why it's dead after 2 years.

moral to the story is. buy a 8-10kg washing machine made by LG or Samsung and from somewhere decent like John Lewis that do very good and cheap additional warranties

Another vote for no frills Beko appliances lasting as well or better than "name" brands.

And at £200 or less new, it's not the end of the world when one packs up after 5 years of hard use.
