How long do you keep your car?

Whilst I agree with the research and test driving theory, my problem is that I need a selection of cars to suit my moods.

In Summer I want a convertible.
In Winter I want a hard top
Some days I want to go fast and see if I can peel the tyres from the rims
Some days I want comfort
etc.

Obviously no one car can satisfy all of my needs so I've settled on something that can be pretty good at most of them (I decided against getting a convertible Mini and bought a motorbike for my open top needs)

I'm a huge fan of all rounders. I love a car that can tick as many boxes properly, and furthermore, tick them all as well as possible. If i wasn't so utterly scared of trim rattles the E93 335i would be further up my list - it sounds like it might tick all of your boxes at least.

That's a car that completely slid under my radar. Will do some investigation...

In theory it is an everything car. Folding metal roof so it's a Coupe when its raining and a convertible when its sunny. It has 306bhp so it's very far from slow, yet it does nearly 30mpg combined. It handles well but is loaded with kit for cruising with.

Ready for the downside yet?

It weighs... 1800kg :( The one I drove weighed closer to 2 tonnes given there was 3 of us in it. Rather blunted the whole thing really, but the potential was there..

Im currently planning on trading the 320d Touring against a 330i/530i Touring either December or January.

Current Cars:
BMW 320d ES Touring - 13months
BMW 328i Coupe - 10months

Previous Cars:
Honda EP3 CTR - 11months (written off)
Suzuki Swift 1.5glx - 7months
Rover Mini 1275 Mayfair - 12months

I've had my current car for 4 months now. Previous to that we had the Zafria for 4 years, Focus for 4 years, Fiesta for 3 months (wrote-off), Fiesta for 3 years, Puma for 6 months, mondeo for 3 years, and the Escort for 3 years.

looking to pass the new mondeo over to the mrs in about a year and then who knows ;)

Until it more or less dies.

Fiat Chinqo was about 3 years
VW golf was 11months
Mitsi carisma has been going almost 4 years and only let me down twice, a broken radiator and a dodgy electrical connection.

I've had my current car for just under 2 months, it'll be 2 months in 2 days. I don't really know when I will sell it, I do intend to keep this car more than a year, hopefully I can get 18 months out of it (for my finances sake)

I have a tendency to keep cars for a very short period and then part ex them at a huge loss, it's my 'problem' really ...I have trouble sticking with one for all that long. The shortest period I kept a car for was my Mondeo ST220 which I had for 3 months, I had the 540i (my last car) for 6 and a bit months ...my Jaguar XJ8 (the car before the 540i) for 7 months.

1st car, 1992 XJ6, 15 months (got newer XJ6)
2nd car, 1990 XJS, 6 months (got newer XJS)
3rd car, 1996 XJ6, 6 months (sold to keep XJS)
4th car, 1991 XJS, 1 year (sold due to too much work needed doing, wanted something more fun)
5th car, 1996 MX5, 1 year (died of rust, sold)
6th car, 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 (owned car since May)

As you can see I change my mind a lot. I never suffer at the hands of depreciation (appreciation, if anything), only rust.
