After a conversation I had at work today, we were all discussing how long we each keep our smartphones for. Myself I tend to keep mine about 4-5 years, the days are certainly gone when I would upgrade every year or two. How long do people plan or hope to keep your smartphones for?

Until it breaks.

S7edge > S20FE > S21U

My S20fe came to a premature end when it got cooked in car. Don't ask me how, but the camera hardware and app failed. As did mobile signal. Not a single other issue.

Can't remember what I had before edge. But that was a good phone.

The S20fe was better. But to be honest, it wasn't an improvement as what I hoped. Great camera.

I do like my S21U. Amazing camera and particularly battery.

Only thing I care about now is camera and battery life. Everything else is moot.

Mine went into conservation mode after it started getting too hot, while clipped to the dash in SatNav mode. Temps outside were pushing 40ºC, so inside it was probably cooking. I expect yours got that same effect, but cooked before it could do something about it.

I'll likely keep mine until one comes out that's a significant improvement... assuming I can ever afford such a thing.

Yeah was strange. It was under the car seat and car was off/parked.

So although it got hot, I was surprised it basically melted!

Still using my Realme X2, so 3 years and counting. I'll probably continue with it until a properly decent midranger that ticks all my boxes comes along.

I have an iphone 8 plus. I resisted upgrading mostly because I like the fingerprint reading home button on it and I'm not too keen on the facial recognition of later phones. Battery is starting to fail now though so I'll be upgrading to a 14 soon. I buy the phones outright from Apple and stick with my £20 a month tariff.

I used to replace my iPhones every other year buying the previous model when the newest model was released. I recently swapped my iPhone X(had it for 4 years) for a Google Pixel 7 and I'd expect to keep it for around 3 years.

How do you find the switch from iPhone to the Pixel?

Currently have the 13PM. Decided to run this phone to the ground. Great camera, great battery (for now) and that's mainly all I care about these days when it comes to phones.

Every couple of years generally. But my phones are abused so they don't last much longer than that! (I.e. they're used extensively for work and play). I probably ought to be more careful but it's a small investment every couple of years and the technology moves on enough for it to be worthwhile.

Much easier than it was when I tried a good 7/8 years ago. Pixel has taken the swipe gestures from iOS ie, swipe from the bottom to go home, swipe across the bottom to change apps etc. so it wasn't so bad.
A lot of time logging in to new apps and stuff but Google Keychain had saved a lot of stuff fortunately. Having a fingerprint sensor is lovely, screen great, camera great and it was a hella cheap change for me,. what with the free PIxel Buds Pro (not arrived yet) and an extra £100 on top of the normal value for trading in my iPhone X.

currently got S22U, can't wait to get rid of it, worst phone I've ever had. This thing never has a signal and I wouldn't even try the 5G. Exynos rubbish.

Average - 3 years. Bought my current phone because dad wanted 'an upgrade' so I gave him my old phone. Phone before that packed up.
Since I went over to Android in 2011, I've changed my phone in 2014,2017 & 2020.
