How long does it take google to find my site?

I have got my first site online and I have registered with webmaster tools.

I am building content for the first month, then I shall seek out backlinks from reputable, related websites.

Should I simply not look for my site on google until the new year?

It should be indexed in a matter of days. How high it ranks will be dependent on the quality of your content. Reciprocal links are not worth a great deal, if anything, these days.
