Ok, my order arrives tomorrow and I'll have 2-3 hours to put together two machines. How long does it take you to put together a machine and what sort of tricks and procedures do you use to do it quickly while making sure you don't break anything (apart from reading the excellent overclocker's guide on building your pc of course)?

Define "build".

If you include finding a stable overclock/(re)format and optimization then atleast a week.

If you mean simply to assemble the components, then yeah a couple of hours.

Couple of hours usually, then a couple of weeks later i tend to take it all to bits and re-route cables etc.

That of course relies on everything working first time out.

Just physically building it could be done in less than an hour i am sure.

Ah, I didn't mean including overclocking or installing OS and other software (which in itself can take quite a few hours). I always think that I'll be able to build a PC in a couple of hours (this includes time to take apart the old machine to reuse the parts), but I nearly always find that I have to waste several hours on some obscure problem such as a faulty motherboard, incompatible ram or the bios refusing to see the HD. We'll see this time around, maybe things have got better...

20-30 minutes to sling it all together & boot to Bios.
To get it how I want it though it takes a Life time & I Love it.

First I build it outside the case this takes 20 mins max. Then I install Windows and then put it all in the case no more than an hour and a half

putting a system together shouldn't be rushed cause your make a silly mistake. I find its more the optimisation time, sometimes systems just fly from go, others feel like your banging your head.

Don't rush the putting together but physical size should be done in around 1hr 1/2 if you know your components other wise stick an hour on.

Tip if you have cheap case be careful, the inside metal edges can be sharp :)

How does it take you lot over an hour
We are talking around 10 items that are All made to fit each other & are all colour coded, My Grandson could do it in less than an hour.

If it's somebody first time building they should really spend a little longer on it, just to make sure the don't rush out of excitement and ruin something.

I just built mine today had no clue what i was doing, opened a guide from google n i took me around 15 minutes???? Diddn't rush and it works fineeeee

putting a computer like making love to a beautiful women :) lol
spend the time gentle caressing just to have it bite you on the rear* place your own word.

just putting parts in not the issue, I just don't rush. To many things get rushed.

You install windows _before_ you put it in the case... that sounds unusual.

Well that way saves you putting it in the case and then finding out that a part doesn't work, why not install Windows on the first chance you get?

depends... 30 minutes usually though it may go up to about 2 hours if someting won't fit right or I won't have any clue on how to attach it (usually happens when a crappy manual is provided).

My parts arrived over most of a week, actual assembly took a few hours including the minor mods to the case.

Bug fixing took several days. Getting the gcard and monitor to co-operate was tedious.

tends to take me longer than it should as i tend to 'overcheck' everything is ok :)
but only a few hours... lets say 2 - 3
