How long does TIM last before you need to apply more?

I was just wondering how often people re-apply TIM? . . . is it a once a year thing (or more often for the serial upgraders) or do some people leave it for a few years?

Does it begin to dry out after x amount of time or?

It should last for years, or until you next remove the heatsink.
