How long is the 9800 GX2?

I'm looking at getting a graphics card for my new build (assuming I can get it working - see my General Hardware board thread).

The case I have to work with is an Antec Solo, which isn't whoamghueg-GPU friendly. So I need to work out exactly how much of my hard drive cage I need to saw away before a GX2 will fit :)

I was considering 9800GTX/8800GTX/8800GTS SLI but the alignment of the PCIE slots on my Asus Striker II Extreme make it pretty much impossible to have SLI with big cards and still have hard drives in the cage. Also considered 9600 GT SLI but it's not a very upgradable solution.

So what're the GX2's? Standard 10.5" in length?

Hello Urban Reflex, the length of the Nvidia 9800 GX2 is:

Here's the NVIDIA reference design 9800 GX2. trust me when I say it looks smaller than it actually is. That's 27cm / 10.6in of pure unadulterated silicon right there.

Source - Here - 2nd paragraph down. :)

Hmm. Come to think of it, 2x 8800 GTS 512 cards would be cheaper and a little faster than a single 9800 GX2. And I wouldn't have to cut my case.

So while I'm on that trail of thought, does anyone know of anything (from Nvidia) that's faster than the 8800 GTS 512 and about 9" in length? Any stunted GTX's out there? :)

Sorry mate, the 512 GTS is fastest at that small size. I always wanted one of the bigger ones, but wasn't prepared remove my extra hard drive bays.:(

Have an issue with this myself right now. If I want anything with more performance over a 8800gts g92, then I got to fork out at least around £300...

Would go for 8370x2 or 9800GTX, but then will need to either new case, external drives, or some kind of caddie, adding at least £60 on top of price of card.

If I wanted to go SLI, would need not only 2 cards but mobo, so £300

If I wanted to go crossfire, its mobo plus cards, so over £300.

Have already had a GTS, so was really looking for something different and better, but not changing case, and don't feel like forking out for more than a card... so stuffed :(

9800GX2 reaches its EOL (end of life) in june, so, I dont think it is a particularly smart move. There is buzz going round that ATI will have a GDDR3 varient of the RV770 out in may, which should take the performance crown off nvidia, for the £250 mark. The proper GDDR5 version at some time later, faster again :) Tis what I am waiting to see.

Jay_t: I CAN'T remove my HDD bays, so consider yourself lucky you have the choice :) I was going to saw away a part of the top bay to fit a GX2 but really I suppose 2x GTS 512 cards is the much easier / cheaper option that'll perform better.Only real dilema is upgradability: Do I pay the extra £30 per card for the EVGA versions (over the BFG) for lower clocked chips but with the chance to step-up?

ffalic: I'd go with the 8370x2 mate. Sounds like a steal to me ;)

GeneralD: That's a good point about the GX2 hitting EOL. I've got a 790i board though, so my best option will be SLI over any single ATI card.

Have just gone with a single 3870 for now.

Have played with many Nvidia cards (7900GT, 7900GS single and SLI, 8800gtx, 8800gt, 8800gts)

Only had a x800 and x1900xt from AtI/AMD. Very brief play with 3850's in crossfire - was impressed with single card performance, but returned them due to poor crossfire (though may have been due to P35 and its 4x slot). Should have just kept one...

Plus theres something fun in getting something thats not top end, and squeezing whatever you can from it :)

This will hopefully keep me entertained until June - hopefully the new cards will be out then.

Hell, hopefully by that point we may have P45 boards too.

You could wait for the 9900GX2 perhaps, effectivly, its a shrunk 9800GX2, running the 55nm process rather than 65nm. That should be yielding some impressive clocks when they release it. If that info is to be believed that is

As long as it doesn't yield some impressive heat
