290X VRM Questions?

How long is VRM1 strip, Just need to know to calculate how many heatsinks to order.

also see this chap has put some tape over, what I think, are resistors prior to heatsink installation, is this a good tip, what type of tape to use?

Don't have the exact length but it's the same length as the 7970's vrm banks, there is a few pics in this thread with heatsinks on top that will give you an idea:

Depending on what heatsink you are using, this is the best air vrm cooling you can get imo and what I'm using on my 290X:

I think the tape that guy has used on the resistors is just a precaution against potential shorting from perhaps using low profile heat sinks or he was maybe worried a heat sink would come loose and cause a short. Looks like regular old sticky tape to me, probably not a great idea, those caps can come loose fairly easily.
