How long is your commute?

I need to make a choice on what job to accept after I graduate and unfortunately I think the length of my commute is going to be a big factor in my decision.

I'm looking at a choice between 20 mins (15 miles) each way and approx an hour (40 miles) each way for the two different jobs. Obviously the closer one gives me more spare time and will cost me less on petrol. I want to know how one hour and 40 miles each way compares with the average.

Leave the house at 7.20am..........walk into work at 9am.

Gotta love london commuting :(

Yeah - when I was talking to my dad about it he had a good laugh at me complaining about a 1 hr commute since his used to take over 2 (apparently, but you know how old people stretch the truth).

I'm going in to the office to speak to the people I might end up working with. I'm going to ask them about actual working hours (eg does the company expect you to put in a 70 hr week). If it's over a 40 hr average week the one hour commute will put me off it.

Roughly 1hr 30mins+ each way for uni. On early days, leave house at 7.05, get bus at 7.15 (first bus in the morning btw), get to train station at 7.30, train comes at 7.50, get to Glasgow at 8.30 and then 10 / 15 min walk to uni.

Coming home is worse, lectures end on the hour and my train is one an hour at xx50. End of lecturer -> getting home = 2 hours.

Go me! :(

I'm guessing you live on the Weymss Bay line and are at Strathclyde Uni?

It's ~35 miles, or about 45 minute drive. But most of the time I take the back roads as its a better drive, so about 55 mins. Once I get to work, its a 1 mile walk from the car park which takes about 10 mins.

All in, it's about 1 hour door-to-door. Thats costs me about £25-30 a week in juice.

If I got public transport instead of driving, it's a 2 mile journey to the train station - except buses don't run until after 8 and I start at 8. A 35 min journey on the train and costs £12.80 a day for a return ticket

That's almost exactly the same as my drive / public transport options.

If the money is good enough, then it's not really a problem. Especially if you like/want the job. If the money is 'alright', then it takes a sizeable chunk out of your wage :(

Yeah - I'm a bit worried about this cause I messed up when they asked me what package I want. Think I will get the offer this week with the salary. Then I will try and negotiate an extra £1500 to cover my fuel.
