cancelled an item before it was delivered (before the shop even got it delivered to them)
was paid by credit card

what's the max time it should take to see the money back in my account?

IIRC max wise it only has to be a "reasonable" time which is usually considered to be about 28 days, most places will refund in 3-5 working days, sometimes quicker.

Half of mine have been effectively instant as close as makes no odds most of the rest were dealt with well inside a week - I don't think 2-3 business days unreasonable.

EDIT: Had a funny(ish) one once - landlord accidentally triple charged me for rent - I warned them that it would incur fees with my bank if they couldn't get it refunded within about 6-7 days... took them 10 days - strangely enough they managed to reimburse the fees which I passed straight on to them less than 12 hours later... could have saved themselves some money... though predictably they then tried to claw that back via a rent increase (compared to what they wanted from a neighbour).

It's a High Street shop that also has a website, it's quite a lot of money so I'm a bit uneasy about it, over 2 weeks since it was cancelled
I actually had o go in to the shop to make sure it was cancelled as my calls weren't being returned
is there any reason that they couldn't process the refund in front of me if I went in to the shop tomorrow? does it need to be done on a week day for any reason?

5 working days from the issue date at the most.

although some places I've had to remind them..
maybe they try to do refunds in batches for the extra interest....
