How long till we really see the use of Quad core?

I could do with one now to help my folding scores. Can't really justify it though as that's all I would use more than two cores for.

Depends what you do with your PC.

I think 4 weeks to wait for a drop in quad is worth it.

And will be a bargain if it comes in at under 200

That depends on what you do with it, for me its a godsend, for most users however they will at most use 2 cores, wait for the cuts tbh. :)

if you post a thread like this you don't need one ;)

some 3d work, modelling, rendering, video work yes a quad core will do you great and spending lots of money to increase productivity is worth it, for work. not a single game makes worthwhile use of it. sup commander uses them but we're talking max fps 39 with a dual core and 40 with a quad core, who cares.

alan wake will possibly use a quad core well. the pre-release hype says it will use a quad core, but that doesn't really mean anything. marketing words and new things games can use all sound pretty and make people think they are advanced(though alan wake looks sweet), but USE and NEED are so so far removed from one another that its simply a wait and see situation as to when we'll really see improvements with quad cores in gaming. there are some beefy looking games on the way, but you can have beefy and extremely efficient, and crap and incredibly inefficient.

definately, at minimum, wait for the price cuts, but remember a possibly big reason for the honestly quite ridiculous price cuts to the Q6600 could be to clear out a backlog of kentsfields for upcoming penryn's. now at first glace i don't think anyone will really notice a huge difference between the cpu's. the only real improvement is SSE4 which is pretty decent, but only if the apps use SSE4 which could take a long time other than a few early encoding applications.

personally i think the Q6600 will be a VERY good chip for very good value once the price is cut and will be a great upgrade for the future games coming in the next year.

Microsoft Flight Simulator after its service pack 1 takes full use of multiple cores. It will use as many cores as can be thrown at it, and all reports are that the extra cores do indeed help in performance significantly. MS had specific help from Intel to implement the multicore abilities, clearly because Intel wanted another selling point. It's the one game that will get me to buy a quadcore (once they come down in price).

SupCom shows good benefits with Quad Core. For me, going from an E6600 to a Q6700 showed a massive improvement in the game.

My main use for it is work though, and it really shines in that. I can happily sit with 6 virtual machines running and doing stuff, and still have plenty of resources to go off and a game whilst I wait for a backup to complete or something.

I would say mainstream use around 2009 remember a lot of games even released next year would have been in development before core 2 duo let alone quad.

Yup Supreme commander is pretty much the only game out there using it remotely...

in the 3rd/4th cores u can see it peaking up to 20-40% usuage thats during the big 1000 unit fights on large maps/highest settings of course.

But overall its true even marketing plays a big part look at crysis.... and I bet u we dont see much performance increase cos even the game developers are using a core2duo and normal 2 cores.... so doesnt look like there applying for use of quad cores much, could be wrong and hope I am :)

Overall I feel its gonna be better to stick with a cheap E6600, wait till july if that desperate or better wait till this fall when even cheaper/better/faster quad core true chips arrive.... by then TF2/Crysis/UT3 will be out and at least u will have a better excuse then, remember all 3 engines "claim" to use quad/multicore cpus more and better and AMD/Intel will be in full gear with there new Quad core true chips.

I'm liking some of these replies :)

I couldn't resist and purchased a E6600.

Going to give it a little oC to 3ghz and if i really need i will upgrade to the quad later on. I think the E6600 will be efficent for me :)

I think it all depends on your usage patterns.

Very few single applications make use of 4 cores; outside specialist apps like 3d Design, Rendering or whatever.

Personally though; I cant remember the last time I closed everything else to play a game. I quite frequently leave all sorts of bits & pieces running all over the place. Its not entirely uncommon to leave eve open, and go do a few laps in Race Driver 3 or a quick sup-com skirmish; its this usage pattern which makes a quad core appeal to me.
Yea, im sure that a lot of the time several cores will be idle, but i'd rather have them there when I nee.. want them, than not. You'll notice however that i've not bought one yet, my system struggles along, and it'll be a nice bonus when I do get one on/after 22nd :)

I did read that Half-Life 2 Episode 2 and hence TF2, Portal, Left 4 dead etc. will benefit from quad-core. Only seen it from one source so far, can anyone else confirm that?

I will be waiting 'til July anyway, but reckon quad-core for gaming will be worthwhile in the future.

Will the price reductions in July ACTUALLY happen or is this some kind of rumour that is just circulating...

I have read on tech sites about the price drop, but have rung a few retailers who say they have not heard anything from Intel about the price drops...

Will there be a wait until july 22nd for many - with no outcome?

its again one of those things, source are making the engine multicore able, but hl2 works sweet as on a single core, so while they will make it able to work on a quad core, its going to be, for now at least, a gimmick selling line. i forget what the plans are exactly for source, i think ep 2 comes out, maybe with the dual/quad core use update but the dx10 update isn't till jan or something. either way i really can't see any engine tweaks for ep 2 resulting in massive gains from a quad core.

they've stretched the source engine too far, for too long and making crappy episodic content is taking too long per episode and really just extending the use of an old engine. i'm not sure if the dx10 engine is going to really be that new tbh. i'd be shocked it if was a ground up rebuild, so a new engine. its just dx10 added which, at heart will mean it won't end up that much better than the current engine.

Surely quicker than doing all that plus building a new engine though? I'm trying to play Just Cause atm and the FPS part of it makes me need to go back to Source. It's not new but it is quality and I thought Episode 1 was class.

Useful for graphic design/CAD, largely pointless for games.

For most people I think it's just an e-peen thing, "quad" sounds good, and anything with more cores has to automatically be better amirite??
