I no this ? cant be answered 100% correctly but I have no idea how fast the market is changing.

Would you think a Q6600 @3.6Ghz+ would last at least 12 months with playing the latest games etc ?

yep...

you have to remember very few games will utilizes a quad, you will get better performance our of a faster duel core at this point in time. In the future games will use all 4 cores, this is when thay will come into there own for gaming.

also most new games are GPU limited, not CPU limited. so it should last.

Seconded, that CPU should see you until Intels next batch of CPU's after the 45nm ones. Save the money on a better CPU and spend on graphics. :)

You'll probably need a better gfx card before you need a better cpu. Games are now starting to utilies quads, although not fully. If you play UT3 on a vista 64 machine you'll notice smoother fps than with a dual. Even with my E8500 @ 4GHz and a 8800GT i get moments of lagging fps, making the game hard to play. To be honest i'd rather have a Q6600 than my E8500.

Don't Panic, the games are GPU limited.

In the last year, I have had 3 different graphics cards, but I am still on the same e6600. Says it all really.

Yes is my answer as it's GPU and not CPU power (though still important) that really determine how fast games will run. Look at the CPU only tests in 3DMark for an example of this. I anticipate upgrading my 8800GTX before my Q6600.

Most new games are GPU limited. just look at Crysis for example. However I decided to buy a Q6600 to get the most out of FSX, which is very CPU limited. I know the quad core is supported by FSX after their SP1 was released. I was however very very tempted by the Wolfdales, but a last min decision said to go for Q6600 and I am happy I did. It has mind blowing potential. :)
