how loud is a 360

I got mine three weeks ago, from a certain high street tat emporium (The one that gives out the big catalogues...) and let's just say it's not one of those nice new ones that some people here have been lucky enough to get.

When it's idling the noise level is acceptable, but when the DVD drive winds up, then it becomes a joke to be honest.

The only time I notice mine being loud is when the DVD drive kicks in on certain games, it really does drive me mad if the game is quiet and its whirring away. Worst one for me by far is Splinter Cell, sounds like my lass is hoovering.

Indeed. Why not try the court of human rights?

it was loud when i first got it, now it dosent seem to be, or ive gotten used to it and dont notice.

don't bother me anyway, i have sound up LOUD. :p

Another thing that affects the perception of sound is age. The older you get the less able you become to hear high pitched whining sounds. Whether this is marriage related or to do with the hardening of the tissue in the ear I don't know.
Haven't we had this discussion before?

And distance to the item, for every 1m noise levels appear to be 3dB lower.

Just think of the nosie yer DVD drive makes when yer installing a game, and its going full pelt 52x, well its a lot louder than that and lasts for as long as your playing as its constantly going, terrible they are.

purchased mine nov 06, and it sits on my PC desk next to my monitor. When i play games on it its REALLY loud imo, tho i have never watched a movie on it only games.

Doesnt really detract from the game too much except for in cut scenes or the quiet bits - gets warm too.

Wouldn't be such an issue if it was in a cab under a telly i'd have thought, but then it would get even hotter.

Almost all of the sound is from the DVD Drive, there is a firmware hack that allows the drive to run at 4x which does indeed make it super quiet which only works with backups however Microsoft should have made an option to knock the speed down on originals thus not allowing one to break the Xbox Live TOC just to make the console run quieter. I know games load slower, a little but at least it's quiet.

After market fans can also help quieten the system.

I agree though it's horrible listening to that disc spinning up during a nice quiet game in the early hours.

just played an evening of demos, and its noticeably better, so def all down to DVD drive.

I contemplated putting that speed limit on mine, but didnt risk it in the end...
