i wanna buy a 360 but i dont want a loud one........when playing at night id have to use headphones...

Is there a way to mod it to be quieter, quieter fans for example ?

Seems to be the luck of the draw as to how loud each one is. Mine is one made October last year and its pretty quiet by no means loud.

Yeah it seems to be that way at the moment, some folk are getting quieter ones, some folk are still getting loud ones.

As noisey as it is, it isn't like it is going to keep your house awake.

some games are wose than others on mine if you try to play at night with lower volume it is really annoying

i am thinking about a vga and optical extension into the next room as my wireless controller works in there it is that annoying

Well if you have headphones on you wont hear it ;)

I'd say between my 4 PCs laptop and 360. the 360 is the quietest.

my mates got one. i though the stock itnel fan was loud until I ehard it. heck his 360 power pack made more noise than tthe actual console. Its is rediculusly loud and very anoying,

on the other hand another friend has a 360 thats silent. wierd

Sound is transmitted vibration so various factors can influence how loud something appears to be.
For example the surface that your 360 sits on will make a difference.
The amount of soft furnishings in the room will make a difference.
The size of the room will make a difference.
The ambient background noise will make a difference.
The distance that you are from the console will make a difference.
I have not tried it but I suspect that the console may vibrate differently if vertically placed as opposed to horizontally placed.

These are just some of the things that can affect your perception of how noisy something is, worth bearing in mind when comparing the noise of a console at a different persons house.

Have to put mine on the carpet to dampen the noise it's that bad, put a disc in and you need ear protectors. :(

If the fan in the PSU is making more noise than the actual console, I would say its faulty. You shouldn't be able to hear the PSU at all unless your ear is right next to it.

Mine is very quiet, fan noise is minimal and the DVD doesn't make much more noise even when its spun up fully. I would compare it to an average modern PC, or an averagely loud laptop.

The DVD drive in gaming only (DVD movie playback is quiet) is what makes most of the noise. Get one which is made after 14/11/2006 as they are supposed to be much quieter as they have a newer drive.

If my old housemate's launch 360 is a a sample indicative of the whole it's like this:

i think he must have an old version or something. but its a stupidly loud console such that he has to turn the tv up to cover the noise

I've experienced 3 separate 360's personally, all from various points of its manufacturing life. The PSU's have all been virtually silent, from a launch day machine to one bought last month.
