How loud is your PS3?

I can hear it, but unlike the 360 you can't hear it when the speakers are turned on, you can only really hear it when the sound clicks off for a loading screen or so.

It's a lot quieter than my PC, bear in mind my PC is what I'd consider lots quieter than my 360. :D

Though on my old 40Gb (the one that died) one time it randomly went to full speed fans, I **** myself it was so loud, it basically went up to the speed you get when trying the "fan test".

I think my PS3 might have a problem, the fan makes a ticking sound even when on standby. Sounds like it might of come loose or something, anyone else have this happen to them?

The only time my the noise on the PS3 has annoyed me is when I was playing Uncharted, it would read the disc quite loud and then stop. Then 5 seconds later it would do the same thing. Even then it wasn't that off putting.

Can't tell it's on sometimes either :)

My 40Gb is silent even after a mamoth GTA4 session, although it does sit next to my HTPC which may cancel out any noise it makes.

The other day when it was really hot, and I had my computer on which pumps out a lot of heat and had been playing GTA4 for a few hours, my fans literally went nearly double as loud as my 360 does

Thats the first and only time I've heard it that loud though

It does get quite noisy after a while playing or watching a DVD though, claims that it's a silent console are a bit off

lowrider if you want to talk to me further take it to email but on these forums? give me a break. you tell the truth and prove it and you get shot down at the mere hint of criticizing a game. all why people who cant tell the difference between an opinion and a fact accuse you of being close-minded.

My guess is (and it's only a guess) it's because the PS3 isn't doing any hardware scaling atm, instead it's probably using few of the SPEs on the Cell and doing the scaling via software, if this is true then it will put allot more strain on the system and therefor cause the fans to step up sooner.

the ps3 has always used the cell for upscaling. what i said was that it seems to ramp the fan up far quicker with this latest firmware. i dont know if they've change any algorithms - i cant honestly see the difference if they have.

My PS3's fan is loud. The fan even kicks in when I am just charging the controller. It's a 40gig and it sits on its own shelf on my AV rack. This is my second PS3, the first one lasted a week before going faulty but it was whisper quiet for the time it did work.
