ok, guys, you were all great helping me spec out my new machine, but I have the build bug now and want to build a budget machine for my sister.

I am doing this as a favour and want to keep cost as low as possible......she is a compete technophobe and the machine will be mainly for surfing..and....that's about it. I have been on the DELL website and for £352 I can get Celeron 346 3.06GHz, XP Home, 256M, 80GB, CDRW/DVD, 17" CRT, keyboard, mouse, MSWorks8, built and delivered.

Will it be possible for me to build a PC of a similar spec for much less if I do it myself............I really want to see how low we can go............

"Primo" Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz DDR2 System (FS-004-AS)

An OCUK system for £199+vat&del

Then get 2nd hand CRT.

Keyboards and mice can be found at EVERY council tip.

thanks!, the Primo comes to £310 with VAT and delivery. Still need a monitor, mouse, keyboard so although a better spec, still coming at in at the same price as the dell.

However, I want to build this machine myself, not just get it delivered. I'm off to build a list of the cheapest part possible.............

Just done this quickly with the cheapest bits I could find. If you went for a Celeron based system you could save another £30 or so

Intel Celeron D 326 2.53GHz (LGA775) - Retail (CP-117-IN) - Is only £30 inc VAT, but change the mobo aswell if you got this obviously

Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU (CA-052-AN)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3200BPBOX) (CP-118-AM)
OcUK Value 512MB (2x256MB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit (MY-005-OK)
Asus A8V-XE VIA K8T890 (Socket 939) PCI-Express DDR Motherboard (MB-160-AS)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80GB ST3808110AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-051-SE)
NEC ND3550 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM (CD-035-NE)
BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 6200 LE Turbo Cache 256MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-027-BG)

Total: £268.86 Inc VAT

Just configured one from Dell with a 3GHz P4 and a 15" LCD for £329. Not sure why yours came out more expensive (other specs were the same).
