S55 AMG is poor

1/4 mile in 14.1 pfffft

350bhp from a supercharged 5.4 litre??

Pathetic to be honest

Nice made up specs;)

TripleT, thats essentially what it is mate, with a few bits n bobs switched around, it was only on the last bit of the assembly line they knew it was gonna be a S55, could have been a 280!!111

Its a highway cruiser for people who want to travel in luxury with power if they need it. Its got no need to be a foot flat rag the testicles off it type of car.
Its build to be as smooth and as relaxing as possible.
It wouldn't surprize me if its got a **** load of torque  .

This is all comiong from someone who doesnt really like Mercs :)

Aye the AMG has two completely different modes, it can act like what the S Class is known for doing, cruising, quiet, smooth and then floor it and its a completely different car, interior is filled with violent growls from the engine, seats start to inflate depending on the gforce of the corner taken, sort of performance you don't see without spending £150k on a supercar. Was kind of a perfect choice as I knew a S500 would have been nice, but it doesn't have the sense of occasion the 55 has. Maybe in the future he will get a dedicated nutter car but this suits our situation fine at the moment as a practical family car.

lol 'decent car', 'mercedes'. I always thought you were one of those members who knew what they were talking about.... What power does your olds pull out?;)

I hadn't realised that power was the sole measure of how decent a car was. But let me see now....

Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser - 22 years old, ~170hp at the rear wheels, tough as a nuclear bunker and almost completely reliable over the two decades and 230000 miles it's been on the road. It's on it's original gearbox (GM 3spd auto with overdrive), has never had any major engine work and the only things that have broken so far* have had "Made in Germany" stamped on them......

Mercedes - over the last couple of years, I've seen Mercs with rust eating away at their bodies, broken gearboxes, malfunctioning electrics....the list goes on. For any major manufacturer it's bad enough for people to be having these issues but Mercedes once had a great reputation for their cars being bomb-proof - quite how and why they seemingly lost this is beyond me.

Christ, in the last 6 years my Fiat has had one new exhaust and some repairs made when someone broke into it. A uni friend's father bought a new Merc a few months ago - I think it's been on the road for about 3 weeks of those months, the rest of the time it's been in getting bits replaced including the gearbox which pretty much exploded.....last word I got was that he's rejecting it and buying a Jaguar.

* - emissions control pump, which I've replaced with an American-built reproduction part and will probably rip off soon anyway, a lot of the engine electric stuff was Bosch-built and has been replaced with a mix of Delco and a few other bits and bobs.

Then you have no idea what a capable car the S Class is. It IS a decent car, one of the best produced actually. Don't lump the S in the 'Mercedes' category you seem to be defining.

Is the engine in the car the same one thats in the Zonda?

Nope, Zonda has the v12 7.3 amg unit. It is the same one that's in the CLK DTM and SLR, with modifications to the supercharger.

Ah, I see. So because the S Class is apparently good, I can't say anything bad about the rest of Mercedes' range. Brilliant. I'm loving your logic there mate.

By the way, you wanna go ahead and back-track on your comment re: power and being a 'decent' car? Or shall I just file you under "clueless Merc zealot"? ;):p

This isn't a thread about Mercedes, hell the car is even hardly a Mercedes after those guys in afalterbach played with it. You came in here posting garbage regarding the car in the first post, something which evidently you know nothing about. You can say whatever you like about the Mercedes range that are affected by the issues you illustrate, but do it in your own thread.

As for power, it is part of being a decent car, reason I mentioned it was because you always banged on about your 'huge olds'.
