My old PSU was dusty and making a lot of noise so i decided to replace it. So i put the new power supply into my PC and connected everything and away i went. After about an hour there was a blue flash followed by crackling electric noise then the PC went dead. I thought that was it , I've killed my PC. I drove to the shop and they replaced the PSU with a more expensive one as i told them the original one must be faulty. Fearing the worst i put everything back together and everything is working and i can't believe it

Even better when i now know how it happened. When connecting the ATX Power Connector i only connected the 20 pin connector and didn't attach the 4 pin connector alongside.

Have i been lucky?

What make was the psu, you probably been ok with only the 20 pin connected.

The one that blew up was an Alpine AP650 (£24) and they exchanged it for a Ezcool EZ650 (£35) .. so far so good, just had a solid hour of Crysis 2 and everything is running fine.

Frankly I'm surprised you got an hour out of it :D
And yes you where VERY lucky.

Lest this be a lesson to all ye who would buy cheap PSU's.

.... what about the Ezcool ? I might cut my losses and get a more expensive PSU for piece of mind ...

you where very lucky but one has to ask what where you doing / still doing sticking such a cheap PSU into a system what If its the one in you sig warrants a much better quality PSU............

As others have already echoed. Your on borrowed time.
The Antec others have linked is a solid buy and wont explode after 10 minutes use.
Personally speaking I wont touch a PSU that isn't Corsair these days.

TBH, if it was me I would find the original box for the new Ezcool, sell it on any buy this.

Hex core + "6970" + Ezcool = Sad Panda

I'd get a proper PSU before you get 'lucky' again.

Echo..echo..echo

Ye gods, you're running the spec in your signature off that PSU?!?!

Unplug your power and network cables right now before your PSU blows and takes down your PC and the whole internet this time!!!

So can i ask why the more expensive PSU is better? I thought a PSU was a PSU  I take it the more expensive one i would be paying for reliability?

Cheers chaps , you've made my mind up :D I've built PC's for years and have never given the power supply a second thought. Even now it's still a learning curve.
