How many cores does xp support

Negatory I'm afraid.

XP Home - 1 physical, 2 logical
XP Pro - 2 physical, 4 logical

Logical means how many cores or virtual processors on that single physical chip. So a P4 with HT counts as a 2. Likewise does a C2D. But a C2Q counts as 4.

Read this in a whitepaper published by Microsoft a long time ago (pre SP2 I think) so it's possible they have changed their licensing policy since then.

SP2 changed the number of supported cores. I cannot remember to what but Steve258's answer sound familier.

You may be right - there was a big announcement back in 2004 where Microsoft "clarified" it's multi core licensing policy. It looks like they may have sneaked in the changes to SP2.
