How many decibels can an iPod (touch) pump out?

I am not an expert on such things so thought I would ask here.

I have an iPod Touch 2G. In simple terms does anyone know, or has measured how many decibels the maximum volume pumps out? I am sure there are things that change this (maybe choice of headphones etc) so I know an answer may not be exact.

I am fairly sure it had a volume limit set, out of the box, which I removed. Maybe the limit was set to a specific decibel level, but I have no way of knowing what that was without doing a factory reset, I guess?

If anyone has equipment or an app that measures this, would they also be able to say how much it is at 1 notch below maximum, then 2 notches etc?

Just saw a report on the proposed EU legislation, on the Politics show, and it got me thinking (I know this is not a new debate, but it just gave me some food for thought).

AFAIK the limit is 80dB.

You can use techniques to unlock that limit but a) the forum probably wouldn't allow such talk and b) you'd be damaging your hearing if you pumped it much higher anyway.

The decibel scale is logarithmic, so it wouldn't be measured in a linear scale (1 notch, 2 notch etc).

A general rule of them is 3dB is double the perceived volume.

A better set of headphones may actually decrease the volume as they'd require more oomph to drive. You'd have to check the manufacturer's site, to see if they can be driven from an iPod (I know many pro level cans that can't).

My iPod has the "Volume Limit" set as the maximum the slider allows (i.e. off), so is that 80 decibels?

I know dB is logorothmic, I just meant, my iPod has 16 bars for volume so is 16 bars 100dB, 15 bars an appropriate percentage of that etc.

frankly, it will vary depending on which headphones you use because all headphones have different efficiency ratings and efficiency-response.

Yes, if the slider is at maximum then it will be pumping out a maximum of 80dB.
