Just interested really. How many (if any) of you lot with a decent amount of code writing knowledge/experience (in any language) are either not in a job that uses these skills or are in one that doesn't satisfy/pay well enough (within reason ;).

Cheers

I've known PHP for 3 years been in employment using it for several months. I am currently involved in writing a comercial game hosting control panel (for my own interests)

I know PHP (XHTML/CSS added bonus's :) )

Had experience with several large company websites which I won't list here. Msn is in trust :)

I am finishing College in 2 weeks and will be available pretty much around the clock :)

I know XHTML & CSS and learning PHP and Python.

However, I have no commercial experience so can't get a job even as a trainee/assistant programmer :(

Going to try and get involved with some freeware/opensource stuff, even if it means learning a new language like C#.

get real guys, PHP has an object model now, and not a bad one at that. Some are employed with six figure salaries to develop PHP applications.

To OP, no I'm not looking, but my company are recruiting - experience not essential, as long as you have your head screwed on, and are not an absolute beginner.

I love Web Development but I've found it impossible to get into due to having no Qualifications in the field. That opportunity sounds interesting. Do you have any more details? :D

Just for the record, I had no commercial experience when I got my first programming job a couple of years ago; all I had was a couple of good websites I'd built for my own personal interest, and I was keen. They had given me a project as a kind of test to show them what I could do. I completed that the best I could. Admittedly I got turned down, because it turned out they didn't actually need anyone at the time, but when one of their guys left unexpectedly I was the first person they thought of to take the role.

I do have a degree in a semi-related field, but I was told it didn't really have any bearing on their decision to hire me. It was down to the quality of the demos I'd done, really.

So, as long as you're good at what you do and can express some desire to learn even more, without commercial experience there will be someone willing to take a chance :)

I use xhtml and css purely for personal interest, and I am trying to lear javascript and php as I go. I'd eventually like to be able to design the full back end of a website and not just the front end.

Though I don't do it as a job, I do volunteer to look after a school website which I am currently in the process of making from scratch :)

Very true.

I had never been paid for a site before but I had a decent portfolio of personal sites I had done and I was very keen on advancing my skills and learning more. This was enough to get my foot in the door at the company I work for. 18 months after starting, I'm now the senior xhtml/css dev and am responsible for almost everything front end.

The web moves so quickly that degrees don't always mean much as a lot of what you're taught could very well be out of date by the time you're finished your degree. Talent and eagerness goes a long way I think.

When I started out I had no technical qualifications and only a knowledge of HTML and Paintshop Pro 4 - but this was 7 years ago and times have changed.

At the minute I'm looking to get into a job which offers ASP.NET training on the job as I've been working with ASP for 6 years and know it backwards but the company I'm working for aren't moving forward into .NET at all.

So if there's anyone reading who's interested in a programmer who knows his HTML, SQL, CSS, JS, ASP, VB 6, Photoshop and the basics of C#, let me know! :D

We aren't web-devs by trade, we're just developers. There is a fair amount of web-work involved, but primarily it's either desktop or middle-ware.

I have a job as a systems engineer, but have also been c# programming for 5 years now... I might make the change soon :)

ditto i had no experience also though i had been classic asp programming / little bit of design here and there in my own time.

took a sucky job to get into the trade and get my experience now im 6 years in and well paid, good company etc etc

right place right time and a willingness to start at the bottom will help alongside a good deal of enthusiasm.

I found it pretty easy getting a job to be honest (got my first commerical programming job while I was still at school). Then again I do low level/systems stuff and not web dev (which everyone and their mothers seems to do at the moment)... Had 4 job offers whilst in my final year uni, took the one I liked best. If programming is a passion/hobby and not something you just do for a 9-5 job and switch off afterwards then you wont have any problems, so long as you can demonstrate this.. (doing opensource team based projects is a good way)

found it quite easy to get a job straight from uni. currently working as a software engineer for a big company developing health care system for the NHS. mixture of things including html, css, javascript, AJAX, classic asp, VB6 COM's, Java, .Net C#, WebServices, XML, XSLT SQL Server. Also done PHP for years but don't use that at all during my job.
